Arkansas vs LSU: Tigers' Defense Will Ensure LSU Survives Another SEC Test

Tim DanielsNov 23, 2011

LSU is one of just two teams in the nation allowing 10 points or less per game. The Tigers' vaunted defense will eventually wear down Arkansas on Saturday, securing the SEC West Division and conference title game berth in the process.

Based on comments by cornerback Ron Brooks, the unit has the right attitude going into Friday's epic encounter (via Yahoo! Sports):

"

We don’t live in a fantasy world. We live in the real world and we don’t focus on what-ifs and possibilities and what could be and things like that. We’re worrying about right now, and right now we’re facing Arkansas and we’re going to prepare and get ready for that team.

Only two teams have scored more than 11 points on the Tigers: Oregon and West Virginia. Both of those squads are averaging more than 36 points per game. Arkansas would fit into that group, so LSU will get a stiff test in the regular season finale.

The Razorbacks have a lot of speed at the skill positions, including wide receiver Jarius Wright, who is averaging more than 100 yards per game.

LSU's plan of attack should be simple—inflict pain. Every time an Arkansas playmaker touches the ball, punish them so they won't be so quick to the hole next time.

Gaining a mental edge is half the battle when two really good teams are facing off. Even a minor hesitation can be the difference between a game-breaking touchdown or minimal gain.

Another key will be a pass rush; Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson has only been sacked 18 times. If the Tigers allow him to stand tall in the pocket, he'll be able to make enough pinpoint throws to keep the Razorbacks competitive.

Both offenses have shown the ability to post eye-popping numbers, so this game will come down which defense makes more key stops. LSU's defense has risen to every occasion so far and they'll do it again vs. Arkansas.

And that Death Valley crowd won't hurt, either.
