BCS Standings: Houston Will Jump Boise State and Receive At-Large BCS Bid
I really don’t understand the BCS rankings sometimes.
The Week 13 version of the standings has Boise State at No. 7 with a 9-1 record, while they placed 11-0 Houston at No. 8.
Houston is obviously the superior team this season and should they go undefeated, be the easiest decision for a non-automatic qualifying team to play for a BCS bowl.
So, what’s the point of the voters and computers sticking the Cougars behind the Broncos for a week or two?
I don’t know.
Boise has games against Wyoming and New Mexico to finish the season, while Houston takes on Tulsa and then Southern Mississippi.
Neither program should lose, and it would be a major upset if they did.
Unfortunately for Boise, an 11-1 record this season won’t do anything to help their BCS dreams.
The BCS mandates that only a single team from a non-AQ conference has to appear as one of the 10 competitors for a top 5 bowl.
And unless there are two spectacular, undefeated non-AQ teams, the selection committee makes sure that only one school, who isn’t from one of the six major conferences, gets into their precious, big-money bowls.
Houston is the most deserving of any non-AQ team this year, as they are currently undefeated and will finish the year that way.
Case Keenum has set a ridiculous amount of records this season and continues to break them as his Cougars are rolling through every opponent they face.
Boise State had a solid season, especially with their opening win against Georgia, but completely lost it by falling to TCU.
With so many solid teams in contention—too many in fact—from the SEC and Big 12, only one small school is going to have a chance this year to play for a BCS bowl, and it will be the undefeated Houston Cougars.
Sorry Boise, it just makes sense. Enjoy being ranked higher, at least for now.
