BCS Rankings 2011: 10 Reasons Why an LSU vs. Bama Rematch Is the Best Option

Ian HanfordNov 20, 2011

LSU and Alabama come in at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the Week 13 edition of the BCS rankings. This is no surprise and rightfully so.

The Tigers are 11-0. They have a bulletproof resume and can add to it with victories over Arkansas and Georgia to close the season.

The Tide's only loss came at the Tigers' hands. Alabama is 10-1 and have been nearly as dominant as the staggering LSU squad.

These two teams have been the most dominant teams in college football this season. Consistently ferocious squads with an aggressive playing style.

A rematch would only be fitting in the BCS national championship game.

Two Best Teams in the Best Conference

1 of 10

The SEC is the best conference in college football. Every year, SEC games are littered with blue-chip recruits doing battle.

This season is no different. For the first time since 1971, the top three teams in the nation are from the same conference. The same division for that matter.

LSU and Alabama are the two best teams in the SEC. Arkansas is not far behind, but Alabama did beat the Razorbacks handily this season. LSU will get their shot in Week 13.

Being the two best teams, in the best conference, has to mean something in the BCS's eyes.

Proven Teams

2 of 10

Combining an SEC schedule with a rugged non-conference schedule is a risky thing to do.

LSU has defeated West Virginia and Oregon outside of the SEC. Those victories, along with their unblemished SEC record, give the Tigers a very impressive regular-season resume.

The Tide didn't schedule an Oregon-caliber team, but they did defeat Penn State in Week 2. The Tide have dominated the opposition and are very proven after running the SEC gauntlet.

Each team will have a chance to add, at least, one more quality victory. Alabama plays rival Auburn in the season's final week. LSU plays Arkansas in Week 13 and potentially will play Georgia in the SEC championship game.

Their talent is hard to deny. Their resumes make them completely undeniable.

Defense, Defense, Defense

3 of 10

LSU and Alabama possess the top two scoring defenses in the nation.

If defense really wins championships, these two are the unquestioned contenders.

Alabama is allowing just over eight points per game. They allowed 21 points to Georgia Southern in Week 12 and over 300 yards. An uncharacteristic performance for an absolutely stellar unit.

The Tide are rock solid at all three levels of their defense. They have playmakers in run support and in pass coverage.

Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower form one of the best linebacker duos in the nation.

The Tigers allow 10 points per game. Not quite as good, but the Tigers may be the more ferocious unit. Alabama is extremely disciplined and very well-coached. LSU is very instinctive and freakishly fast.

Their secondary is unrivaled. Tyrann Mathieu and Morris Claiborne may be the two best players at their position.

Both defenses are good enough to shut down the best offense in the country, regardless of playing style. That alone makes this matchup seem right, in the end.

Biggest Competition Has Been Each Other

4 of 10

LSU and Alabama did battle in Week 10. The Tigers clawed their way to a, 9-6, victory.

Low-scoring, overtime and flawed on both sides. The hyped matchup both lived up to its' billing and didn't all at the same time.

Fans have to be wondering what adjustments these two titans would make for a rematch. Two respected coaches with a chance to hit the drawing board. Talented players with another chance to gain the ultimate national respect.

Alabama's only blemish is their loss to LSU. Despite the loss, the Tide had more flow on offense and probably should have won.

Four missed field goals and an LSU interception were the ultimate difference.

LSU deserves a shot at the national title. The Tide deserve a shot at redemption.

Oklahoma State's Loss to Iowa State

5 of 10

LSU and Alabama received help in Week 12. Four of the top 10 BCS teams fell in last week's action.

Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State in double overtime. Brandon Weeden threw three interceptions, and the Cowboys were held below their normally prolific offensive standards.

All numbers aside, the Cowboys lost. The one, in 10-1, is the most important Cowboy statistic at this juncture in the season.

A loss to an unranked team in Week 12 should be a death blow to the Cowboys. They aren't as proven as LSU or Alabama, at this point.

If the Cowboys can grab a victory over Oklahoma in the final week of the season, this could change. As of now, the loss to the Cyclones is devastating to the Cowboys national title dreams.

Virginia Tech Is Unproven

6 of 10

Virginia Tech does not have an impressive victory outside of their win over Georgia Tech.

Their only other quality opponent was Clemson. Clemson dominated the Hokies in their meeting early in the season.

It isn't the Hokies' fault the ACC is weak. However, it's the reality.

LSU and Alabama's resume exceeds the Hokies' resume in every way imaginable.

Virginia Tech is No. 5 in the newest edition of the BCS rankings. They are still on the outside of the title picture and should remain there.

When looking at one-loss teams, the Hokies and the Tide do not compare.

Houston Is Very Unproven

7 of 10

If Virginia Tech is unproven; Houston may as well be an FCS team.

That doesn't mean Houston isn't worthy of their current, No. 8, ranking. It just means the Cougars are not proven.

The Tide and the Tigers hold a major advantage over he undefeated Cougars. Every Conference USA victory for Houston, may as well, count for two SEC victories for these two elite squads.

Houston is probably going to wind up undefeated. Regardless, under no circumstance should they be in the conversation with either of these teams.

Arkansas Lost to Alabama

8 of 10

Arkansas is No. 3 in the Week 13 edition of the BCS rankings. The Razorbacks haven't been ranked that high since 1978.

The Razorbacks are the third part in the superb SEC West trio. Their only loss this season is against Alabama in Week 4. They lost 38-14 in Tuscaloosa.

As of now, that's the sole reason Arkansas is not in Alabama's place.

If the Razorbacks can defeat LSU in Week 13, this will be a totally different conversation. Arkansas is very capable and aren't facing the same pressure the Tigers face.

The Tide and the Tigers deserve the nod over Arkansas today. The future is still uncertain.

Stanford's One Loss Is Against Their One Quality Opponent

9 of 10

Stanford's two quality opponents this season were Oregon and USC.

The Cardinal snuck by USC, 56-48, in triple overtime. The Ducks handled the Cardinal in Week 11, 53-30.

The lopsided loss to Oregon should be very damaging to Stanford considering their relatively-weak schedule. The Cardinal were severely outmatched. The best player in the country, Andrew Luck, looked out of his element for the first time all season.

Stanford is a solid team. However, their resume is the same caliber as, either, Alabama or LSU.

If Stanford had beaten Oregon, it still wouldn't have been.

A Week 13 victory over Notre Dame will help the Cardinal, but it still won't be enough to bring them up from No. 6 in the BCS rankings.

Pass the Eye Test with Flying Colors

10 of 10

LSU and Alabama are the two best teams in the nation. It's plain and simple.

Throw the BCS computers out the window. The Tide and the Tigers pass the bystander's eye test with flying colors.

Watch these two teams. They are on a different playing field this season. The only time they have looked human was against each other.

Oklahoma State is dynamic offensively but flawed defensively. Arkansas lost to Alabama. Outside of those two teams, there's no real competition.

The Tigers and the Tide are the cream of the crop this season. Blue-blood teams in the truest sense.

Football isn't played with computers. However, college football's fate is determined by them.

One look, from living eyes, is all it takes to see what the computers should decide.
