BCS Rankings 2011: Who Got Screwed in the Standings?

Ian HanfordNov 20, 2011

The Week 13 edition of the BCS rankings has arrived. Upsets galore in Week 12 turned the Top 10 upside down, and allowed underlings to climb the BCS ladder.

It, simply, would not be college football if the settled did not become unsettled. Four of the Top 10 BCS teams were upset in Week 12.

Chaotic debates will ensue over this week's rankings. That was obvious the second Oklahoma State fell to the Cyclones of Iowa State.

Amid the mayhem some teams rode the rankings carousel up a few spots. Others didn't climb as high as they deserved, or sit behind a team a little-less worthy.

Here are eight teams who got screwed in this week's BCS rankings:

Kansas State Wildcats

1 of 8

Kansas State has quietly put together a 9-2 season. Their two losses are against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Not bad.

The Wildcats have put together a solid season under Bill Snyder. Wins over Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M and Missouri are solid. A narrow loss to the Cowboys was also noteworthy.

Lacking flash, the Wildcats have a tremendous amount of heart. They thrive on big plays defensively, and the legs of quarterback Collin Klein on offense.

Their solid resume in a solid conference should put them above other two loss teams.

If they can defeat Iowa State in their final game; they should be sitting pretty in the standings.

Wisconsin Badgers

2 of 8

The Wisconsin Badgers are two desperation passes away from being in the center of national title considerations.

Instead of 11-0 the Badgers are currently 9-2. Their losses to Michigan State and Ohio State both were the result of a prayer answered in the final seconds. Unfortunate but critical losses.

Wisconsin should be ahead of Michigan. Michigan has lost to Michigan State, as well as Iowa. Both losses came on the road as did Wisconsin's.

The Badgers have been more dominant, and have a shot at the Big Ten title. The Wolverines do not. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, that fact should matter in the BCS rankings.

Georgia Bulldogs

3 of 8

Georgia began the season with losses to Boise State and South Carolina. The Bulldogs are currently 9-2.

Nine straight victories have the Bulldogs sitting pretty. Champions of the SEC's East division, and an LSU upset away from a BCS berth.

However, the Bulldogs rank behind their SEC east nemesis South Carolina.

Yes, the Gamecocks did defeat the Bulldogs in Week 2. Georgia's one SEC loss separates their resumes otherwise.

The SEC is the toughest conference in football. Georgia's loss to Boise State is a very good out-of-conference loss for a red-hot team.

Georgia is a better team, and has played much better football this season.

Boise State Broncos

4 of 8

Boise State is 9-1 due to their Week 11 loss to TCU.

Once again, the Broncos are on the outside looking into the BCS picture. For the second season in a row, it's a matter of a missed field goal.

The Broncos are behind teams like Oklahoma State in the BCS standings.

Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State in Week 12. It was on the road but Iowa State shouldn't beat the Cowboys in a big game. The Cyclones are arguably a worse team than TCU.

Boise State doesn't have a proven resume. However, their Week 1 victory over Georgia looks better as each week passes.

The bottom line is, if the Broncos were any other team they would have moved up a few spots further in the BCS rankings.

Houston Cougars

5 of 8

The Houston Cougars are 11-0. A perfect season is an accomplishment regardless of the Cougars' strength of schedule.

Houston does not have a strong resume coming out of Conference USA. However, they have the top scoring and passing offense in the country.

The Cougars currently sit one spot behind Boise State. Boise State's victory over Georgia makes up for their loss to TCU in the BCS's eyes. At least enough to keep the Broncos ahead of the undefeated Cougars.

Boise's résumé is not much better than Houston's.

The Cougars should, at least, be ahead of their BCS-busting adversary.

Oregon Ducks

6 of 8

Oregon has fallen to No. 10 in the Week 13 edition of the BCS rankings. The Ducks lost to USC in Week 12.

The Ducks should not be behind the No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners.

Oklahoma's losses to Texas Tech and Baylor do not compare to Oregon's losses to LSU and USC.

The Ducks have beaten Stanford. Whether Stanford's resume is strong or not, that's a solid victory for the Ducks.

Oregon should absolutely be out of the national title conversation. However, Oklahoma should be in the Ducks' current position.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

7 of 8

Nebraska has had a solid first season in the Big Ten. The Cornhuskers are currently 8-3.

In Week 12, the Huskers lost to Michigan. Their other losses are against Northwestern and Wisconsin. Michigan and Wisconsin are two of the top five teams in the Big Ten this season.

Nebraska has defeated Michigan State and Penn State. Quality victories over two quality teams.

Baylor has three losses, and does hold the Week 12 victory over Oklahoma. They sit three spots ahead of the Huskers at No. 18.

If Baylor is No. 18, Nebraska should be right ahead or just behind the Bears.

TCU Horned Frogs

8 of 8

TCU is No. 20 in this week's BCS rankings. The Horned Frogs defeated Boise State in Week 11 and followed it with a victory in Week 12 over Colorado State.

TCU's victory over Boise State should put the Horned Frogs ahead of Penn State in the polls.

The Nittany Lions are in a stronger conference, but the Horned Frogs have the best win between the two teams.

Penn State's losses are better than TCU's but their underwhelming offense does not make them an exciting pick in the polls.

Both teams are close, but snapping Boise's 65-game win streak at home is a tall task.

If Penn State defeats Wisconsin they will jump into the Top 15. Until then, the Horned Frogs should be No. 19.
