BCS Rankings Week 13: Five BCS Top 25 Teams We Have Lost Faith in
This season, some very crazy things have happened. I'm being honest when I say I have never seen a week so full of upsets in the top five in my entire life of watching college football.
That point aside, many of the teams we, as fans, had reached out to and put our faith in just lost it this past weekend. It's disparaging to see so many top teams fall to low or unranked teams, especially after seeing them crush tougher squads earlier in the year.
This list reaches deep into the Top Ten, much farther than it should. Teams all over the rankings fell from their seemingly-safe pedestals, crashing into the landscape with a resounding thud this morning.
We take a look at who out there has finally lost one too many games to keep our faith going into Thanksgiving weekend.
No. 25 Florida State
1 of 5The Seminoles were supposed to be competing for the National Title by this point. They were supposed to be ranked in the Top Five of the BCS and have E.J. Manuel vying for the top spot in the Heisman Race. None of the above has happened.
However, over the past five weeks after their three game skid early this season, fans and voters had begun to regain faith that Florida State would come out somewhere near the top of the ACC. That faith vanished sometime last night, after FSU fell to the Virginia Cavaliers.
For a squad that is so stacked with talent and potential, they have been one big disappointment this entire season. Watching them drop their second game to an unranked team put the nail in the coffin for a preseason favorite.
No. 23 Texas
2 of 5Texas, unlike Florida State, wasn't exactly supposed to be the talk of the town this season. They instead have performed quite admirably, losing only to the two Top Ten Oklahoma schools and unranked Missouri.
Their freshman QB David Ash started to come on as the season progressed, but the team has mostly been carried by their running back play. Running backs Malcolm Brown, Joe Bergeron and Foswhitt Whittaker have carried a somewhat stagnant offense all season in an impressive display.
They have three losses to ranked teams, all in the conference. Losing to K-State at home by four points will put the Longhorns out of the rankings for good, especially if Baylor and A&M can pull off victories, each at home.
No. 16 Nebraska
3 of 5Nebraska was the team to beat in the Big Ten after the solid Michigan State win, but that all fell apart after dropping to lowly Northwestern. Many wondered if they could ever recover, considering how tough their schedule is.
However, the Cornhuskers regained faith when they went into Happy Valley and took down a mourning Penn State squad that almost pulled off a grueling win. Going into the Big House, Bo Pelini and company had all the potential to beat the Wolverines and win their division.
Instead, Michigan handed the Cornhuskers a crushing loss, falling by 28 points. Their third loss of the season, Nebraska loses its strong chance to take the Legends division. They still will retain a strong bowl outlook, but Big Ten Championship hopes are gone for the Big Ten newcomer.
No. 7 Clemson
4 of 5Clemson has been the ACC rock this entire season, winning every game until the tough Georgia Tech loss. Most wrote it off as a fluke, saying the Tigers had a bad game and would finish out the season strong.
They were on their way to doing so, barely beating a weak Wake Forest team 31-28, until this past weekend when they fell to a somewhat weak North Carolina State squad. Now, with only a single game left at South Carolina, it looks like the Tigers won't be finishing the year strong.
Even with a loss to the Gamecocks, however, the Tigers still win the ACC Atlantic division with ease. Taking down a tough Virginia Tech team in the championship will be even more difficult though.
Clemson fans have once again lost faith in the Tigers after their second loss to an unranked team. Don't expect them to gain it back easily.
No. 5 Oklahoma
5 of 5Oklahoma is one of the most solid teams on the ticket, or at least they were until yesterday. After a obvious fluke loss to Texas Tech at home, the Sooners were back on track to possibly reach the title game. Those hopes were dashed yesterday.
After their in-state brother fell to unranked Iowa State, everyone out there claimed the Sooners had no chance of reaching the title game. Oklahoma players obviously listened, losing their focus and falling to lowly Baylor.
The Bears had never before beaten the Sooners and made history last night with their solid 45-38 win. After last night's events, OU still had some chance of reaching the title or at the very least a great BCS Bowl game. Now, with a loss to Baylor, things look extremely grim for a squad that started the season with grandiose hopes.
