Liverpool FC: Win over Chelsea and Fernando Torres Will Boost Reds Hugely

Jake RoddNov 20, 2011

Liverpool conquered Chelsea for the third time in a row in what was ultimately a hard-fought, testing win. Maxi Rodriguez and Glen Johnson provided the Reds with the fire power to beat their bitter rivals.

Both teams sit on 22 points each now, with the same amount of games played, but the boost Liverpool will obtain from winning such an important match has given them the edge for the time being.

The game somewhat typified what Liverpool have to do if they are to qualify in next year's Champions League.

Firstly, be determined. It was hard work from Charlie Adam to win the ball that set up Liverpool's first goal, and then hard work throughout the match from each and every player to keep Chelsea from scoring a second goal.

Also, use impact substitutes. When Liverpool were being pushed back into their own half and a Chelsea goal seemed inevitable, Dalglish was able to bring on players to try and score another goal and keep Chelsea out. Moreover, they were able to bring on good players. Jordan Henderson had a great game coming on late, and Stewart Downing provided cover in a cameo performance.

It is the strength in depth and quality that has been the biggest improvement under Dalglish.

The next thing is start well. A fast start has been common under Dalglish's Liverpool side, and the one-nil lead at halftime would not have been possible without it. The start also sends a message to opponents, saying "we want to win this match."

Next, tactics. Liverpool were second best in periods of the game and that will always happen in the top tier of English football. The trick is to defend well. Obvious, isn't it? Well, it's not always easy. Dalglish made sure Liverpool were well organised throughout the game, keeping their shape when it mattered most.

Lastly, beat rivals. Sometimes it's these games that prove to be the difference come May. Dalglish will know this, and so will Liverpool. It's this knowledge ultimately that will hopefully propel the Reds up the table.

Oh, and Steven Gerrard is coming back. Sounds good, right?
