BCS Standings: 5 Teams Likely to Move Down
It was a strange weekend to say the least, and for many teams it was one they'd like to forget. The shake-up from last week to this week in the BCS Standings may be as dramatic as we've seen in the 14-year history of the system.
As we prepare for Sunday night's announcement, here is a look at five teams who are certain to slide down the rankings.
Clemson
1 of 5The phrase "Clemsoning" has become popular over the past few seasons, to signify a team who starts strong and then fizzles under the pressure of November. Unfortunately for its namesake, the Tigers raised the bar for "Clemsoning" on Saturday with an embarrassing blowout loss to N.C. State.
The Tigers clinched the ACC Atlantic Division title last week and face rival South Carolina next week, so it was a classic trap game. However, with an opportunity to climb into the top five of the BCS Standings, Clemson both quickly and decisively took itself out of the national title picture.
Nebraska
2 of 5Nebraska looked like a very attractive BCS at-large candidate after Oklahoma State's loss on Friday night, but needed to win out against Michigan and Iowa. On Saturday afternoon, they couldn't have looked less like a BCS candidate.
The previously 16th-ranked Cornhuskers will likely slide into the 20s, and will now face the Hawkeyes on Friday with the only stakes being in which part of Florida they will play their bowl game.
Oklahoma
3 of 5The injury bug has hurt Oklahoma all season, but it was an even peskier annoyance called Robert Griffin III who knocked the Sooners out of the national title race on Saturday night.
No. 5 Oklahoma figures to fall out of the top 10, but will still play for the Big 12 title in two weeks against Oklahoma State if they can defeat Iowa State at home next weekend. That should be little solace for a team that might have controlled its national title destiny had it survived its trip to Waco.
Oklahoma State
4 of 5It was set up perfectly for Oklahoma State. They would cruise past 5-4 Iowa State and then get 15 days to prepare for a showdown at home with Oklahoma with a BCS Championship Game berth at stake.
All of those dreams went up in the cold air of Ames, Iowa on Friday night, and the No. 2 Cowboys will tumble down the BCS Standings. They're not completely out of the picture, but after blowing a 24-7 lead, even the plethora of upsets on Saturday couldn't provide any comfort to the Pokes.
Oregon
5 of 5Oregon showed a lot of heart coming back after being down 38-14 to USC to have a chance to tie the game with a last-second field goal, but all that matters is that the Ducks came up short against the Trojans. Their hopes for a repeat trip to the BCS Championship Game are over.
Oregon was No. 4 in last week's BCS Standings but now figures to drop near the bottom of the top 10. They still will go to the Rose Bowl with home wins over Oregon State and whichever 5-4 team wins the Pac-12 South, but Pasadena was not the end goal for the high-flying Ducks.
