BCS Standings: 5 Teams Likely to Move Up
Believe it or not, there were some elite teams who actually won this weekend. With every loser there must be a winner. While upsets in Ames, Eugene, Waco and Raleigh received most of the headlines, there were also teams who took care of business and will get a sizable leap in Sunday's BCS Standings.
As we await Sunday night's announcement, here are five teams who figure to benefit the most from Saturday's chaos.
Arkansas
1 of 5Prior to Saturday, it appeared that Arkansas would play the role of spoiler next Friday when they travel to Baton Rouge to play No. 1 LSU. Now, the Razorbacks might just be playing for a berth in the BCS Championship Game.
The Hogs, ranked sixth a week ago, will likely find themselves No. 3 on Sunday night, their highest BCS ranking ever. They showed no signs of looking ahead to the Tigers in a 44-17 pounding of Mississippi State. Now will play their biggest game since hosting No. 1 Texas in 1969 with the national title at stake.
Houston
2 of 5The Cougars began the week at No. 11, but will make a major leap after four teams above them lost. They are now the only unbeaten team besides LSU, and while it would take another weekend like this one for them to play for the national title, they could climb as high as No. 6.
Is it possible for Alabama, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Virginia Tech to all lose another game? After Saturday, you can't rule it out.
Michigan
3 of 5Michigan and Nebraska both had reasonable BCS aspirations heading into their showdown in Ann Arbor on Saturday, and the Wolverines' convincing 45-17 win has them likely just a win over hated rival Ohio State away from a BCS bowl.
They were ranked 18th heading into the weekend, and figure to climb to the fringe of the Top 10 this week.
For a team that lost 22 games from 2008-2010, what Brady Hoke and the Wolverines have accomplished this season is truly remarkable.
Stanford
4 of 5It was quite a weekend for No. 9 Stanford. In addition to beating bitter rival California, Andrew Luck likely climbed back to the top of the Heisman Trophy race, and the Cardinal again are back in the national title picture.
They figure to return to the Top Five of the BCS Standings on Sunday. If the SEC can somehow whittle itself to one contender, Stanford may just need an Oklahoma State loss to Oklahoma for a trip to New Orleans.
Virginia Tech
5 of 5The Hokies have been flying under the radar all season, thanks to a weak non-conference schedule and a blowout loss at home to Clemson. They'll find themselves likely in the No. 5 or No. 6 range in Sunday's BCS Standings, however, and still with an outside shot at the national title.
Frank Beamer's team likely trails Oklahoma State and Stanford in the pecking order, but both have difficult games remaining. They'll get a boost in the computers if they can beat both Virginia and Clemson to win the ACC title, so Virginia Tech remains a contender.
