BCS Rankings: Which Team Does an Unbeaten Houston Knock out of a BCS Game?

Jonathan WooNov 20, 2011

Here is the scoop in the BCS.

There are two undefeated teams left in the rankings. Sitting atop the college football world is LSU, a team that can waltz into the National Championship Game with two more wins. A handful of places below the Tigers—not second, not third, maybe not even fourthare the Houston Cougars, a perfect 11-0 after a handling of the Conference USA East's leader SMU.

Are the Cougars BCS bound?

If so, which top-ranked BCS teams will get the boot in favor of a Houston team that has put up some gaudy numbers against the suspect opposition in the Conference USA?

Here is a look at five possibilities.

Boise State

1 of 5

Unfortunately for Boise State, its undefeated season took a huge shot in the arm after the Broncos' loss to TCU a week ago, as did their BCS at-large bid.

Boise State does have a much more convincing win over Georgia than any of Houston's victories, but an unblemished season can speak volumes, which is why the Cougars' have a good chance of taking Boise State's spot in the BCS as the at-large team.

Not exactly the farewell send-off that Kellen Moore had hoped for, but until the Broncos get into a real conference, that is the way the cookie crumbles.

Arkansas

2 of 5

Ahh, the nature of living the SEC.

Arkansas' fate may ride on its final regular season game against No.1 LSU. A win for the Razorbacks will shake up the BCS rankings in a huge way and change the landscape for the postseason.

But assuming that the Hogs leave Baton Rouge with their second loss of the season, an unbeaten Houston team will still claim a BCS berth.

That is life in the SEC. Arkansas would have lost to both LSU and Alabama—two of the top three teams in the country this seasonput up big wins over No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 15 Auburn and No. 9 South Carolina and still be watching the BCS games in January.

Houston's Odds of a Knockout: 85 percent

Oklahoma

3 of 5

Oklahoma's thrilling loss to Baylor Saturday night put a huge damper on a Sooners' season that showed so much promise at the beginning of the year.

With Oklahoma State's loss on Friday night, the Sooners had an opportunity to possibly jump their in-state rivals with a win, but alas, it was not in the cards.

Still, the Bedlam game on Dec. 3 will feature a couple of great teams this season and will provide a mighty showdown for the Big 12's bid into the BCS.

While both teams feature suspect defenses, especially against the pass, Oklahoma could be on the short end of things with Houston getting more BCS love.

Oregon

4 of 5

Oregon still has a fighter's chance at a BCS bid despite its second loss of the season to an up-and-coming USC team.

The Ducks were in the Pac-12 driver's seat after slipping past Stanford, but those same cards did not fall into place against the Trojans.

Still, who really believes that this Oregon team would not pummel a relatively unchallenged Houston offense (because that's what the Cougars are right, just an offense)?

Oregon is still prime for a BCS finish, but stranger things have happened.

Houston's Odds of a Knockout: 3 percent

Stanford

5 of 5

By the same token as Oregon, Stanford is still in position for a BCS appearance, though the Cardinal should approach every game warily.

A close call in a 31-28 win over Cal put Stanford back on track after a heartbreaking loss to Oregon. Another slip-up puts the BCS in jeopardy for the Cardinal.

A glance at the rankings looks to have two teams from the Pac-12 in the BCS, one of which will be at-large. So, do the math. If Oregon gets the nod for the Rose Bowl, Stanford should get the at-large, and vice-versa.

But for Houston to knock off Stanford would take a serious crime.
