BCS Rankings: Is SEC Rematch, Sixth Straight National Title Guaranteed?
With three of the nation's Top Five teams losing last night, it may be all but a forgone conclusion that Alabama and LSU meet in the BCS National Championship for a rematch of the "Game of the Century" that ended in a 9-6 Tiger win.
But is the SEC rematch guaranteed? Definitely not.
If we have learned anything from the last couple weeks in college football, it is that anything can happen.
So what would have to happen for the Crimson Tide and the Tigers to not meet in the national title game?
For one, LSU absolutely has to lose next weekend against Arkansas, which isn't all that outrageous, even though the Tigers play at home. Next, Alabama would have to lose the Iron Bowl for the second straight season against Auburn—much more outrageous than LSU losing to Arkansas.
Both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams losing would open up the door for Arkansas to match up against the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship game.
If the Razorbacks were to lose in the SEC Championship game, all hell would break loose.
Both Arkansas and Alabama would have two losses and would be out of the picture, but LSU would only have one loss and would likely still head to the national title game based on their resume.
This would open the door for possible one loss teams like Oklahoma State, Stanford and Virginia Tech to potentially match up against LSU in the BCS National Championship.
One thing that I don't want to hear: that an undefeated Houston team deserves a shot at a national title. I would rather see a couple of two-loss teams play in the BCS National Championship game than Houston because they would be more deserving.
But in the end, the odds are certainly in favor of the SEC winning its sixth straight national title. But, this season has taught us that nothing is guaranteed.
If only we had a playoff, all this BCS nonsense could just be avoided.
