College Football: Recapping Week 12 Scores for Top 25

Matt ShetlerNov 19, 2011

As we head down to the wire of the college football regular season, there is a lot of moving and shaking that can still happen as teams try to position themselves for postseason play.

With Iowa State's shocking upset of Oklahoma State Friday night, it goes to show that anything can still happen the rest of the season.

Here's a recap of how the Top 25 fared in Week 12 and what implications it could have for the remainder of the season.

1. LSU

1 of 25

The Skinny: LSU rushed for over 350 yards as a team and scored four times on the ground as the top ranked team in the land cruised by Mississippi 52-3.

Key Moment: Ron Brooks picked off Rebels quarterback Zach Stoudt and returned it 46 yards for a score on the game's third play from scrimmage.

What it Means: If LSU holds on, it means they are two big wins away from securing a spot in the BCS Championship Game.

2. Oklahoma State

2 of 25

The Skinny: Iowa State freshman quarterback Jared Barnett threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns as the Cyclones shocked No. 2 Oklahoma State 37-31 in double overtime.

Key Moment: Heisman hopeful Brandon Weeden threw for 476 yards on the night, but threw three interceptions—none bigger than when Ter'Ran Benton picked off his first pass attempt of the second overtime.

What it Means: Bedlam will still be big, but it could have been much bigger. The Cowboys' chance for a national championship are now in the rear view mirror, right along with Weeden's shot at the Heisman Trophy. The best Oklahoma State can now hope for is to win the Big 12 Conference and reach a BCS game.

3. Alabama

3 of 25

The Skinny: Alabama racked up over 450 yards of offense as the Crimson Tide defeated Georgia Southern 45-21 (yes, they really played Georgia Southern this late in the season).

Key Moment: With not much on the line here, the Crimson Tide made one more late push to get Trent Richardson the Heisman Trophy as he rushed for 172 yards and combined to score three touchdowns.

What it Means: The win keeps the Crimson Tide in a good position to reach the BCS Championship Game.

4. Oregon

4 of 25

The Skinny: Alejandro Maldonado shanked a 37-yard game-tying field goal attempt as time expired, and USC upset Oregon 38-35. As the football sailed wide left, so did any chance of Oregon competing for a national championship.

Key Moment: USC quarterback Matt Barkley was as good as ever, but it was his fumble that allowed Oregon to make one last charge after trailing by 18 in the fourth quarter.

What it Means: Oregon won't be jumping Alabama anytime soon in the BCS standings. It looks like the Ducks will be settling for a Rose Bowl trip.

5. Oklahoma

5 of 25

The Skinny: Oklahoma rallied to tie the game late, but in the end, there was just too much of Baylor's Robert Griffin III. The Sooners had no chance of stopping him, as Griffin put up over 500 yards of total offense against the No. 5 team in the nation en route to a 45-38 Baylor win.

Key Moment: Anything that Griffin III did, especially his game winning drive in which he led the Bears 80 yards in only 23 seconds.

What it Means: The Sooners needed to keep winning, but if any team was hurt the most by Oklahoma State's loss, it was Oklahoma. The Sooners needed Oklahoma State to enter Bedlam unbeaten to have any chance of reaching the BCS Championship Game. Now, with the loss, they have no chance anyway.

6. Arkansas

6 of 25

The Skinny: Razorbacks quarterback Tyler Wilson set a school record by completing 32 passes in the Razorbacks' 44-17 win over Mississippi State.

Key Moment: Mississippi State pulled within 14-10 in the second quarter, but Wilson connected on a 32-yard touchdown to Joe Adams, and the Razorbacks never looked back.

What it Means: Arkansas could create even further BCS chaos when they travel to face No. 1 LSU next week.

7. Clemson

7 of 25

The Skinny: Clemson came into Saturday averaging a league-best 37 points per game, but it was the North Carolina State offense that was the unstoppable one as the Wolfpack upset the Tigers 37-13.

Key Moment: North Carolina State scored 27 points in the second quarter and never looked back.

What it Means: Not much for Clemson, as they had already wrapped up the ACC Atlantic Division.

8. Virginia Tech

8 of 25

The Skinny: Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas combined for three touchdowns as Virginia Tech moved a step closer to winning the ACC Coastal Division with a 24-21 win over North Carolina on Thursday.

Key Moment: With the Tar Heels ready to go up 14-0, Antone Exum forced a Ryan Houston fumble at the Hokies 5-yard line. The Hokies recovered and subsequently drove 95 yards to tie the game.

What it Means: Virginia Tech reaches the ACC Championship Game with a Florida State win over Virginia.

9. Stanford

9 of 25

The Skinny: Andrew Luck and the Stanford Cardinal survived a slow start but got back into the winning column with a 31-28 victory over Cal.

Key Moment: With a steady stream of rain falling, Luck connected with Levine Toilolo for a four-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter to extend the Cardinal's lead to 21-13. Stanford stopped the Cal offense and quickly put the ball back in the hands of its star quarterback.

Luck wasted little time, finding Toilolo for a 41-yard gain and finished off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to fullback Ryan Hewitt to put Stanford in front 28-13.

What it Means: The Cardinal remain in the hunt for a BCS bowl and hold out very slim hope for a shot at the BCS Championship Game.

10. Boise State

10 of 25

The Skinny: Kellen Moore threw for over 360 yards and four touchdowns as Boise State scored the game's first 21 points in a 52-35 route of San Diego State.

Key Moment: The Broncos probably wish Moore got off to this type of start last week; he was hot early as Boise State scored on nearly every first quarter possession to take a 21-0 lead.

What it Means: After last week's loss to TCU, the Broncos have little chance of reaching a BCS game, but they must keep winning to have a slight chance.

11. Houston

11 of 25

The Skinny: Case Keenum threw for over 300 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, both passing and rushing, as Houston defeated SMU 37-7.

Key Moment: Houston relied on its defense rather than its high-powered offense as they limited the Mustangs to a mere 93 first half yards.

What it Means: The Cougars remain unbeaten and on track for the first BCS appearance in school history.

12. South Carolina

12 of 25

The Skinny: Alshon Jeffery had his first big game in quite some time as the Gamecocks secured their ninth win, defeating the Citadel 41-20.

Key Moment: After the Citadel closed to within 20-13, Connor Shaw connected on second half touchdown throws to Ace Sanders and Jeffery to open the game up.

What it Means: Georgia's win means that the Gamecocks won't be heading to the SEC Championship Game, but today's win gives South Carolina back-to-back nine-win season's for the first time in 118 years.

13. Kansas State

13 of 25

The Skinny: Kansas State only put up 121 yards of total offense on the night, but managed to build a lead and held on to defeat Texas 17-13.

Key Moment: Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein hit Chris Harper with a 16-yard touchdown pass with only nine seconds remaining in the first half. If they didn't score, the offensively-challenged Wildcats probably wouldn't have won the game.

What it Means: Just a potential better bowl game at stake for these Big 12 Conference foes.

14. Georgia

14 of 25

The Skinny: The Bulldogs wrapped up the SEC East with a 19-10 victory against Kentucky.

Key Moment: The Georgia offense struggled all day, but quarterback Aaron Murray hit Marlon Brown with a fourth quarter touchdown pass to make it a two-possession game.

What it Means: After an 0-2 start to the season, Georgia returns to the SEC Championship Game for the first time in six seasons.

15. Michigan State

15 of 25

The Skinny: Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes as the Spartans cruised to a 55-3 win over Indiana.

Key Moment: Cousins connected on a pair of first quarter scores as Michigan State led 17-0 after one and never looked back.

What it Means: The Spartans will play for the first ever Big Ten Championship after clinching the Legends Division.

16. Nebraska

16 of 25

The Skinny: The Cornhuskers were blown out in the second half by Denard Robinson and Michigan en route to a  45-17 road loss.

Key Moment: The Michigan defense was outstanding and didn't allow Nebraska to convert on third down until midway through the third quarter.

What it Means: The Cornhuskers won't be able to win the Big Ten Championship in their first season in the league, as they have been eliminated from contention in the Leaders Division.

17. Wisconsin

17 of 25

The Skinny: Montee Ball had a huge game, rushing for over 200 yards and three combined touchdowns as the Badgers beat Illinois 28-17.

Key Moment: The Badgers trailed 17-7 at the half, but came out of the locker room and got their struggling offense going. Forcing four Illinois turnovers helped out a lot too.

What it Means: Next week, Wisconsin is set for a home showdown against Penn State with a spot in the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game on the line.

18. Michigan

18 of 25

The Skinny: Michigan played their most complete game in years, owning the second half as the Wolverines defeated visiting Nebraska 45-17.

Key Moment: Denard Robinson rushed for a second quarter touchdown to break a 10-10 tie and then did the same in the third quarter to put Michigan up two possessions.

What it Means: Michigan won't win the Big Ten, but can win their 10th game of the season next week at Ohio State. Considering where they were a season ago, the Wolverines have to be happy about the possibility of heading to a pretty good bowl.

19. TCU

19 of 25

The Skinny: TCU avoided a letdown a week after knocking off Boise State, using three rushing touchdowns from three different players to defeat Colorado State 34-10.

Key Moment: The Horned Frogs came out flat and were out-gained in the first half despite holding a 13-3 lead at the break. It apparently took them a half of football to get going because they looked much sharper in the second half.

What it Means: TCU won their 23rd consecutive MWC game and hold out hope for reaching a BCS game for the second consecutive season.

20. Southern Miss

20 of 25

The Skinny: Southern Miss gained 523 yards of total offense, but it wasn't enough as UAB defeated the Golden Eagles 34-31.

Key Moment: Ty Long's game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter came on a drive in which UAB ran nearly nine minutes off the clock.

What it Means: Southern Miss actually had a slight chance of reaching a BCS game if a couple dominoes dropped for them. That won't happen now, but the Golden Eagles still can complete an impressive 10-win season with a win next week.

21. Penn State

21 of 25

The Skinny: Penn State won its first game without Joe Paterno since 1965, using a pair of Stephon Green first half touchdown runs and a stingy defense to defeat Ohio State 20-14.

Key Moment: Both defenses came to play, especially in the second half, which saw neither team score. That made Penn State's immediate answer of an Ohio State touchdown in the second quarter a very big part of the game. After the Buckeyes closed to within 10-7, it took the Nittany Lions only two minutes to score on a four-yard run from Green.

What it Means: Tom Bradley's first win gives the Nittany Lions a share of the Big Ten Leaders Division. His second win could send Penn State to the first Big Ten Championship Game. In order for that to happen, though, the Nittany Lions have to head to Wisconsin and steal a win.

22. Baylor

22 of 25

The Skinny: Robert Griffin III put on a show, amassing over 500 yards of total offense as Baylor upset No. 5 Oklahoma 45-38.

Key Moment: Anything that Griffin III did, especially his game-winning drive in which he lead the Bears 80 yards in only 23 seconds.

What it Means: It's a chance for Baylor to get a win against a quality team, which could get them into a better bowl game.

23. Texas

23 of 25

The Skinny: Texas rallied late behind backup quarterback Case McCoy, but it wasn't enough as the Longhorns, who have scored only one touchdown in their past two games, lost to Kansas State 17-13.

Key Moment: The Longhorns allowed a Collin Klein touchdown pass with only nine seconds remaining in the first half, which proved to be a difference maker.

What it Means: Both teams are looking to improve their standing the the Big 12 Conference.

24. Auburn

24 of 25

The Skinny: The Auburn Tigers survived a scare, but used a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to beat Samford 35-14.

Key Moment: Clint Moseley isn't really known for what he can do with his legs, but his 22-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave the Tigers the breathing room they needed.

What it Means: For the second time this season, the Tigers survived a scare from a team they should have blown out.

25. Florida State

25 of 25

The Skinny: Florida State allowed a Kevin Parks 10-yard touchdown run with slightly over a minute remaining as the Seminoles, once the No. 5 team in the country, saw their disappointing 2011 season continue with a 14-13 loss to Virginia.

Key Moment: Florida State caught a pair of breaks on their final drive while attempting to win the game. A facemask penalty on Virginia allowed the Seminoles to convert a fourth down, and a pass initially ruled complete in bounds that would have killed the clock was overturned by replay and ruled incomplete. However, all that was a moot point because Florida State kicker Dustin Hopkins missed a 42-yard field goal to end the game.

What it Means: A Seminoles win would have put Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship Game. We will have to wait another week to see how that plays out.
