Urban Meyer Ohio State: Buckeyes Need to Convince Meyer to Consider Coaching

Andrew KulhaNov 19, 2011

No offense to current Ohio State head coach Luke Fickell, but the Buckeyes need to do everything they can to convince former Florida Gators head coach and current ESPN commentator Urban Meyer to coach their football team.

It just makes too much sense.

Ohio State is easily one of the biggest names in college football. In fact, they are one of the biggest names in NCAA sports in general.

There is no doubting their pedigree, championship-caliber teams and name-brand recognition.

Ohio State practically recruits itself.

That being said, the school and football program did take quite a hit when former coach Jim Tressel was caught in an improper benignity scandal involving himself and some of his players, which eventually led to his resignation and sanctions on the university.

Ohio State needs a new face, and Meyer would be the perfect fit.

As of right now, though, there is apparently nothing in the works, according to the Associated Press via the Washington Post:

"

Urban Meyer isn’t interested in talking publicly about Ohio State, declining comment Saturday morning.

Former Buckeye Chris Spielman is well aware of the building speculation that Meyer will end up leading Ohio State, but said it is just a rumor at this point.

"
"

“We were in Bible study last night, he and I were, and it was news to us,” Spielman told The Associated Press before he and Meyer worked as ESPN analysts for the Nebraska-Michigan game. “There’s no deal.”

Contacted earlier this week by The AP, Ohio State AD Gene Smith said no deal had been struck with Meyer. Other Ohio State athletic officials have also denied the reports.

"

Meyer also denied the rumors during the broadcast of the Nebraska-Michigan game:

No offense to Fickell, but if a high school player had to choose between playing on a team coached by Fickell or Meyer, they are going to chose Meyer a majority of the time.

Meyer coached the Florida Gators for six seasons. He led them to two national championships, three SEC East titles and a 65-15 record when all is said and done.

Fickell doesn't even hold a flame to Meyer, nor should he.

The Buckeyes are still a great football program, but there is no doubting the fact that they are missing that certain intimidation and excellence that Tressel brought to the field every Saturday.

Meyer would bring that and more.

He would be the ultimate healing potion for a school that is still reeling after losing the face of their program, so Ohio State needs to go out there and do everything they can to get him.
