Texas A&M Football: 5 SEC Teams A&M Will Regret Overlooking
Texas A&M's move to the SEC has had the college football nation on its heels for the entire season, leading to multiple universities changing their allegiances. As the Aggies look forward to their SEC debut, however, they will have to start examining who will threaten them in their new conference.
A&M will be more than challenged every single year by the SEC powerhouses that have controlled the conference for decades, ranging from Alabama and LSU in the West to Georgia and Florida in the East. However, there are many teams the Aggies will overlook.
In the SEC, this will be their downfall. The talent that exists on some of the "lower-class" squads is superb and can be more than dangerous to mid-tier teams like Texas A&M.
The Aggies have dealt with bottom-feeders before, almost always beating Kansas, Baylor and Iowa State in the Big 12. However, the lower-teams in the SEC now are much better than Baylor or Kansas. In fact, they are probably more comparable to Texas Tech or Oklahoma State.
Over the next few years, A&M will overlook many of the lower-class SEC teams and regret doing so. Here are the top five that will surprise the Aggies in their new conference.
Vanderbilt Commodores
1 of 5Vanderbilt is the smart school. In other words when it comes to football, it's the university all the other bigger kids pick on when they need to get a solid win. However, as of late, they have become much more potent.
As the Aggies enter the SEC, they become tied for second academically with Florida. The Commodores have always been first on this list from an SEC perspective and will create a somewhat academic rivalry with A&M as they enter the conference.
These two teams have never played before in the entire history of college football and will finally get their chance sometime in the next couple of years. This matchup should be exciting for both schools.
Their somewhat new coach James Franklin has been extremely impressive, having his team beat Ole Miss and Kentucky easily, as well as losing to Florida and Georgia by five points and Arkansas by just three points. They also lost a close overtime game last weekend against Tennessee.
A&M fans and players may overlook this team due to their history as a weaker team in the conference, but junior QB Jordan Rodgers and company can play with any of the big teams in the SEC.
The Aggies will rue the day they forget just how good Vanderbilt be.
Tennessee Volunteers
2 of 5Tennessee is a traditional SEC powerhouse, but hasn't exactly lived up to its hype lately. After the whole Lane Kiffen deal and a couple of tough seasons, the Volunteers are still a threat to be reckoned with in the SEC.
They only have five wins on the season so far this year, but still have the opportunity to reach a bowl game. Sophomore QB Tyler Bray has performed admirably and will be one of the top tier QBs in the SEC over the next two years.
Whenever and wherever the Aggies have to take on Tennessee, they can not overlook this Volunteer squad. They have the clout, talent and potential to eventually retake control of the SEC East.
This is another SEC East team A&M must look out for over the next few years.
Ole Miss Rebels
3 of 5Ole Miss has had a tough season. They've already fired their coach Houston Nutt and only have two wins on the season so far, both against non-conference foes Fresno State and Southern Illinois.
The Rebels have had QB troubles and recruiting problems as of late, also having difficultly taking on their in-state rival MSU since coach Dan Mullen arrived. In the SEC West, Ole Miss is the weakest team and is a Godsend for a division that has the most difficult competition in the country.
The Aggies may look upon these mascot-challenged Mississippians with hope for an easy division win, but overlooking a team with a new coach and a lot of talent will be a big mistake on A&M's part.
Kentucky Wildcats
4 of 5Kentucky is a basketball school, and on the court A&M will be challenged by these Wildcats every single year. On the gridiron, however, Kentucky has never been the most successful university in the SEC.
With only one conference win this season over Ole Miss, the Wildcats are the worst team in the SEC East. Entering into the conference, the Aggies will have the opportunity to overlook these Wildcats, and for good reason.
However bad Kentucky is, they always have the basis to upset any team in the SEC and will continue to do so over the years. Watch out for the Aggies when they visit the bluegrass state because leaving with a loss is certainly within the realm of possibility.
Mississippi State Bulldogs
5 of 5After a summer of hype, the Bulldogs, like the Aggies, have disappointed this season. With only five wins, four of them out of the conference, MSU hasn't been impressive but can still make the bowl season.
Similar in many aspects to the Aggies, being that they study agriculture and engineering and have been overshadowed by their in-state rival to the north, coach Dan Mullen has found a way to push them out of the darkness.
The Bulldogs still have a long way to go before they can stand up year after year to big-time teams like Alabama and LSU, but they can still be dangerous to squads like Texas A&M.
Underestimating such a talented team would be disastrous for A&M, especially when the Aggies are playing the Bulldogs in Starkville. Look out for MSU when they take on Texas A&M in this annual divisional battle.
