BCS Rankings 2011: Teams Outside Top 10 That Have Most To Gain in Week 12
Even though the focus remains on the nation's top teams, there are several schools outside the Top 10 that still have BCS dreams. In order to make them reality, winning out is the only option, and it all starts with Week 12. Here are the three teams with the most to gain on Saturday.
No. 13 Kansas State Wildcats
Collin Klein pulled a rabbit out of his hat in Kansas State's quadruple-overtime win over Texas A&M. It was a must-win game for the Wildcats, who had lost two straight games, and Klein tallied six touchdowns to avoid BCS extinction.
Things don't get any easier this week, as Kansas State travels to Texas to take on the Longhorns. It would be a much needed marquee victory, but the defense will need to step up in order to make it happen.
The Wildcats are nine-point underdogs, so if they pull out the victory, they'll have earned it.
No. 16 Nebraska Cornhuskers
Nebraska is coming off a big win against Penn State and sits in the middle of the two-loss pack. The Cornhuskers get a chance to leapfrog some of those teams with a trip to Michigan to take on the fellow 8-2 Wolverines.
It would be baffling if Nebraska beat Michigan State, Penn State and Michigan during a four-game stretch while also losing to Northwestern. That loss might end up being what costs the Cornhuskers, both in the BCS at-large race and the Big Ten.
Michigan is the favorite, but don't be surprised if Nebraska comes out on top.
No. 22 Baylor Bears
Baylor hasn't picked up a big win since defeating TCU in Week 1. In the team's other chances to have a major impact on the BCS chase, against Kansas State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, the Bears came up short each time.
Robert Griffin III could use a huge performance in one of these high-profile games to help boost his Heisman Trophy candidacy along with Baylor's slim BCS hopes. A win against Oklahoma, which might already be looking ahead to its clash with Oklahoma State, would accomplish both tasks.
The oddsmakers don't have much faith as Oklahoma is more than a two-touchdown favorite, but it will be interesting to see how they handle the loss of Ryan Broyles.
