Bowl Projections: Boise State's BCS Dreams Will Still Become Reality
Being a member of the Boise State Broncos has to be the most difficult in all of college football because, despite the team’s reputation, one loss and you are eliminated from BCS competition. However, with so much parity and confusion in the sport this season, they are still going to get to one of the five big bowls.
On Saturday, Boise State was given a taste of its own medicine against an improving TCU team on the blue turf. The Horned Frogs scored a touchdown to pull within one point with just over one minute to play, but instead of going for the extra point, they went for two and converted.
The loss was devastating for the Broncos, who had national championship aspirations if they made it through the season undefeated. Their body language coming off the field was so depressing. You have never seen a team look so sad after losing a game.
The articles written had the Broncos with little to no chance at playing in the BCS, and Houston, assuming they finish undefeated, would take their place.
From Chris Dufresne of the Los Angeles Times:
"Boise State's 36-35 home loss to TCU was a crippling blow to the Broncos' BCS hopes because it all but handed the Horned Frogs the Mountain West title.
"
This is great news for Houston because the at-large bid for the best non-AQ school ranked in the top 12 must go to a conference champion.
But fear not, Broncos fans, they are still in a prime position to make it to a BCS game. There are two reasons hope is still alive.
First, they are a better team than Houston, and they would be a better matchup for a team like Alabama in the Sugar Bowl than Houston or Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl than Stanford. The selection committees like getting teams in their bowl games that have notoriety and a strong following.
The second reason is that Houston is going to play one of those games in the final two weeks, where it is closer than it should be, and the team will have to respond. It is easy to win when you are winning by 40 points, but you can’t win every game like that in sports.
Houston’s final two games are against the best teams than it will play all season—SMU and Tulsa—and one of those teams could easily pick off the Cougars.
Boise State has earned the right to play in a BCS game. The team has said and done all the right things, and they deserve to showcase their talents on one of the biggest stages in college football. Hope is still alive for the Broncos, and it will become reality because there are going to be some upsets along the way these final three weeks. They will play in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma.
