BCS Rankings 2011: Oregon and 3 Top 10 Teams with No Shot at a Championship
I'm sorry Oregon, you can't go to the championship game.
The No. 4 ranked Ducks are riding high after dismantling No. 9 Stanford Cardinal on their home field by 23 points. It was a very impressive win no doubt, but that doesn't change the fact they can't make it to the championship game.
If No. 2 Oklahoma State loses, it would be to No. 5 Oklahoma, who would proceed to skate past the Ducks.
Plus they still have to leap frog No. 3 Alabama, something that doesn't seem likely considering the Ducks don't play a ranked opponent in their last two games and 'Bama plays No. 24 Auburn.
It's a shame that a team who has won their last nine games by at least two touchdowns doesn't have a shot, but such is life in the BCS.
Here are two other elite teams that have no hope of going to the championship game:
No. 7 Clemson
The Tigers are experiencing one of the greatest seasons in years, but hopefully they all know it won't lead to a championship game.
They still have to play at No. 12 South Carolina, which would certainly boost their profile for the computers. Yet they have too many hurdles to jump over.
They can't overtake both Oklahoma teams, ditto for all three SEC teams clogging their path. They can end up at No. 3 or No. 4—but that's the Tigers ceiling.
No. 10 Boise State
OK, I think this is obvious, but I just wanted to take the time to say how disappointed I am in the Broncos.
For the past two years they have been the poster boys for everything that's wrong with the system as they thrash every opponent in their way. Yet two years in a row they lose to a lesser opponent in November and don't force the hand of the voters and the computers.
It really stinks for everyone that hates the current system and I hope they enjoy their bowl game that will be played before New Year's Day.
The BCS: where one missed field goal can destroy an entire season and fuel the supporters of the system all at once.
