50 Things We Learned from Week 11 in College Football

Martin SondermannNov 13, 2011

Week 11 was as crazy and interesting as any this year in college football.

Two Heisman hopefuls took hits to their stock, and the BCS picture began to clear up.  A few coaches began to feel the heat, and a team of Ducks re-gained altitude.  What surprises are ahead?  Who knows, but if Week 11 is any indication, it could be a crazy finish to the season.

Let's take a look at 50 things we learned in Week 11.

No. 50: Football in the Fall Is Always Interesting

1 of 50

With all the upsets, craziness, blowouts and overtime games, college football is as exciting as ever.

No. 49: UCLA Will Probably Have a New Coach Next Season

2 of 50

If UCLA doesn't beat Colorado next week, the "probably" will go to "certainly."

No. 48: BCS Keeps Things Interesting

3 of 50

You have to admit, a playoff system wouldn't make the regular season as interesting as the BCS system makes it.

No. 47: It's Very Hard to Go Undefeated—in Any Conference

4 of 50

With just three undefeated teams left—LSU, Oklahoma State and Houston—it is becoming obvious that going undefeated isn't as easy as some might think.

All three of these undefeated teams still face tough games before the season is over, so only time will tell if they can finish perfect.

No. 46: Georgia Will Probably Play LSU for the SEC Title

5 of 50

Georgia passed its last big test against Auburn. The only real game left for them is Georgia Tech.

However, big brother will probably remove all sting from the Yellow Jackets.

Expect the Bulldogs to keep the momentum going all the way until the SEC title game.  Do they stand a chance against LSU?

No. 45: Texas A&M Doesn't Know How to Win a Close Game

6 of 50

Two of the Aggies' last three games were lost in overtime, including this last weekend's four-overtime loss to Kansas State.

No. 44: Miami vs. Florida State No Longer Matters on a National Stage

7 of 50

Remember when this game was the talk of the country?

No. 43: University of Idaho Should Return to the Big Sky Conference

8 of 50

With the Vandals' only wins over North Dakota and San Jose, the University of Idaho should think about what is best for it.

The Vandals' stadium holds fewer than 20,000 and they rarely get half that to watch one of their lackluster games.

Going back to the Big Sky might be a step forward.

No. 42: Tennessee Can't Wait Until Next Year

9 of 50

However, things aren't done for these Volunteers.  With games left versus Vanderbilt and at Kentucky, the young Tennessee team could finish 6-6 on the year.

No. 41: Ole Miss Needs More Than a New Coach

10 of 50

Ole Miss needs more than a new coach.  It could start with a new conference and go from there.

No. 40: Toldeo Has to Be Tired

11 of 50

After losing 63-60 last week to Northern Illinois, Toledo bounced back to a 66-63 win over Western Michigan.

No. 39: People Would Rather See Offense Than Endure Watching Defense

12 of 50

Be honest, which game was better to watch: LSU vs. Alabama or Oregon vs. Stanford?

No. 38: Notre Dame Needs a Conference

13 of 50

Without a chance at a conference title, does anyone care what the Irish do in the last couple weeks of the season?

No. 37: Alabama Probably Won't Play LSU in a Rematch

14 of 50

With Oklahoma State ripping it up lately, it doesn't look like the Tide will roll into the title game.

No. 36: Wisconsin Has Bounced Back

15 of 50

After two horrible losses, Wisconsin has bounced back with two very impressive wins.

No. 35: Arizona Is an Embarrassment to the Pac-12

16 of 50

Two wins and eight losses, a coach gone missing and a loss to Colorado make Arizona the biggest embarrassment of the Pac-12.

No. 34: Oregon State Is Almost as Embarrassing as Arizona

17 of 50

It started with a loss to Sacramento State, a team that is now 4-6 in the Big Sky Conference.  Since then Oregon State has lost seven more while winning just two.

What happened in Beaver land?

No. 33: Heisman Race Is Losing Its Luster

18 of 50

After Luck ran out and Boise couldn't score Moore points, the Heisman race doesn't have an undefeated candidate.

No. 32: Boise State Needs the Big East

19 of 50

If the boys from Boise were in the Big East, one loss wouldn't kill their season.

No. 31: Oregon Is Not Flying South for the Winter

20 of 50

Well, they may be flying south to Pasadena, but these Ducks are flying high!

No. 30: Southern Miss Is No Accident

21 of 50

The Golden Eagles have won eight straight and have a record of 9-1.

No. 29: Wyoming Is No Pushover

22 of 50

Wyoming is 6-3 on the year and it played TCU and Nebraska close until late in the game.

It's a much-improved team with a bright future.

No. 28: Big 12 Might Be the Best Conference in College Football

23 of 50

Top to bottom, the Big 12 might be better than the SEC.

No. 27: Oklahoma State Might Be the Best Team in the Nation

24 of 50

Incredible offense.

No. 26: South Carolina Is Overrated

25 of 50

Even in a win over Florida, South Carolina proved it is not as good as its ranking.

Less than 300 yards offense and fortunate to hold off a mediocre Florida team, South Carolina proves it's better to be lucky than good.

No. 25: Virginia Tech Is Better Than Many Thought

26 of 50

For some reason, Virginia Tech has not gotten the credit it deserves this year.

However, a 37-26 win over Georgia Tech proved it's for real.

No. 24: Ohio State in Danger of Finishing 6-6

27 of 50

After a painful 26-23 overtime loss, Ohio State faces a possible 6-6 record.

With games against Penn State and Michigan left to play, it could be a bad finish to a very subpar year for the Buckeyes.

No. 23: Tulsa Is for Real

28 of 50

After losing three of its first four, Tulsa has won six straight.

A Nov. 25 appointment with Houston will let the Golden Hurricane prove if they have staying power.

No. 22: Big East Is Plain Crazy

29 of 50

Just when the Big East looked like it was clearing up, another upset mixes things up.

West Virginia handed Cincinnati its second loss of the season this week.

No. 21: Arizona Might Need More Than a New Head Coach

30 of 50

Colorado? You lost to Colorado, 48-29? A new coach may not cure your troubles.

No.20 SMU Is on a Full Scale Meltdown

31 of 50

These are the same mustangs that were ranked right?

The same ones that beat TCU right?  After losing three of the last four games, including a 24 to 17 loss to Navy on Saturday, SMU is a horse looking for a glue factory.

With Houston next week, it might just be a sticky situation.

No. 19: Oklahoma State vs. LSU Would Be an Incredible Game

32 of 50

That offense against that defense—come on, that would be awesome!

No. 18: New Mexico State Has a Chance at a Bowl Game, Winning Record

33 of 50

Sure, it's a long shot, but when is the last time New Mexico State had a chance at a winning record and a bowl game?

Now 4-6 after a win over Fresno State, if the Aggies can somehow get wins over BYU, Louisiana Tech and Utah State, they will finish 7-6 and bowl eligible.

No. 17: Some Things Are Far More Important Than Football

34 of 50

There are lots of things far more important than football.

No. 16: USC Has a Good Head Coach

35 of 50

Say what you want, USC has a good head coach.  Is he very good?  Only time will tell.

No. 15: Irish Have Horrible Fashion Sense

36 of 50

Seriously? Who approved this? Who looked at this helmet and said, "Perfect, give me 80 of them"?

No. 14: Texas Is a Strange Team

37 of 50

After some solid wins of late, Texas stumbled against Missouri, losing 17-5.

That's right, five points.

A few more runs batted in, and they would have had a chance.

No. 13: Nebraska Is a Strange Team

38 of 50

After losing to Northwestern last week, Nebraska bounced back with a solid win over Penn State.  This team is hard to figure out.

No. 12: Texas Tech Raiders Not Who We Thought They Were

39 of 50

After losing to Oklahoma State by a beast of a score 66-6, Texas Tech has proved the win over Oklahoma was a big ol' fluke.

No. 11: Kansas State Is Sticking Around

40 of 50

After losing to the brothers Oklahoma two weeks in a row, Kansas State showed us it's not yet ready to throw in the towel.

A gutsy 53-50 overtime win over Texas A&M proved there is a bit more gas in the tank.

No. 10: Illinois Has Crumbled

41 of 50

After losing to Michigan this week 31-14, Illinois has now lost four in a row.

No. 9: Georgia Is Getting Better by the Week

42 of 50

Georgia is looking good, and it seems like it's getting better every week.

The Bulldogs handled Auburn this week 45-7.

No. 8: Houston Might Be for Real

43 of 50

The Houston Cougars are devouring competition, and this week was no exception, beating Tulane by a score of 73-17.

These cats might be for real, but two games against SMU and Tulsa will show us what these Cougars are really made of.

No. 7: Washington State Proved It Has a Bite

44 of 50

Washington State was on the prowl this week.

The Cougars pounced on some Sun Devil and had quite a meal, handing Arizona State a 37-27 defeat.

No. 6: Utah Is Coming Around

45 of 50

Utah is starting to get its sea legs after diving in the Pac-12 ocean, defeating UCLA 31-6.

No. 5: Penn State Has a Long Road Ahead of It

46 of 50

If anyone saw the Nebraska vs. Penn State game, you know the prayer at the beginning of the game was a step in the right direction.

However, it is clear that there is a long road ahead for Penn State and its faithful.

No. 4: Ducks Are More Than Some Thought They Were Quacked Up to Be

47 of 50

After destroying Stanford 53-30, Oregon is back in the national championship discussion pond.

No. 3: Boise State Needs a Kicker That Doesn't Go Wide Right

48 of 50

With all the issues with kicking last year, you would think the Broncos would have learned from that lesson.

No. 2: No Moore for Boise State

49 of 50

Even Kellen Moore couldn't overcome his team's mistakes.

No. 1: Stanford Ran out of Luck

50 of 50

Stanford is not the team we thought it was.

Unless, of course, you thought the Cardinal were overrated, then they are the team you thought they were.
