New England Patriots vs. New York Jets: 3 Keys for Topping the Jets
With a third consecutive loss and the division lead on the line, the Patriots will compete in arguably the most important game of the season against their New York rivals.
The Pats' offense has struggled through their last three games and their defense has struggled all year, making a tough matchup even tougher as New England prepares for the Sunday night showdown.
Here's a look at what they need to accomplish to pull out the win.
Spread the Ball Around
1 of 3Brady's having some trouble trusting his offense lately. Against the Giants, the veteran quarterback tended to seek out Welker, even when other receivers were more open. Despite the questions surrounding Ochocinco, Brady needs to get into a better rhythm with him and Branch to diversify the offense a bit.
Week 10 provides a particularly great opportunity for Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowksi. With the Jets struggling to cover tight ends, the pair has a chance to make some big plays in the air against a defense that boats a "no fly zone."
Relying on Hernandez and Gronkowski is not going to be a long term fix for a New England offense that has struggled through its last three weeks, but it will serve to gain some first downs against the Jets.
Utilize the Run Game
2 of 3While the Jets have a tough run defense, offenses have succeeded against them by looking to the ground. Oakland and New England rushed for over 150 yards in two of the Jets' three losses. The Jets' only other loss was anomalous as three of the Ravens' four touchdowns were brought to the end zone by Batlimore's defense.
The Pats may not have Darren McFadden, but BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 136 yards against the Jets in Week 5. New England should look to him again this Sunday.
Kevin Faulk would also be a viable weapon if he's able to suit up. Despite not playing since Week 2 of the 2010 season, Faulk looked good against the Steelers—and the Pats would benefit greatly having another veteran back in the offense.
Win the Turnover Battle
3 of 3When it rains, it pours for New England, with nine of the Patriots' 14 turnovers committed in their three losses. In their losses against the Giants and Bills, the Pats turned the ball over four times. The Pats also coughed up the football four times in their near loss to the Cowboys.
Tom Brady, who once had 358 consecutive passes without an interception, has already thrown 10 picks this season, so it's no surprise that winning the turnover battle is crucial for pulling out the win in their Sunday night matchup. The Patriots must keep their confidence if they commit a turnover early since in other games it has catalyzed a multiple turnover disaster.
