Penn State Scandal: Joe Paterno Can't Dodge Jerry Sandusky Questions Forever
At some point, Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno is going to have to face the music. He's a key player in the child sex abuse scandal that has grabbed hold of Penn State, and it goes without saying that he has a lot of questions to answer about what he knows of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.
However, Paterno will not be answering any questions about Sandusky in a Tuesday press conference. Penn State has put out a press release claiming that JoePa will only answer questions about Saturday's game against Nebraska.
As far as reactions go, Ivan Carter of CSNWashington.com had one that is fairly typical:
It's a legit gripe. The focus concerning Paterno and the Penn State football program at the moment has nothing to do with football. It has everything to do with what Paterno learned or didn't learn about Sandusky back in 2002, and people want answers from the horse's mouth.
It appears that all those who want answers are going to have to wait. Right now, JoePa only wants to talk about football. Come to think of it, don't be surprised if he only wants to talk about football for the rest of the season.
But Paterno can't duck questions about Sandusky forever. He may be able to succeed in eluding the press, but the Sandusky case is not going to be able to reach a conclusion without Paterno's input. He's going to speak sooner or later, and his words are going to be relayed to the public no matter what.
Maybe Paterno is right not to oblige the media for the time being, but if he thinks he can get out of answering questions, he better think again.
He's merely delaying the inevitable.
