BCS Rankings: Oklahoma Sooners Still in Good Position

Jacob KeyesNov 9, 2011

Oklahoma fans were given reason to be concerned after seeing Alabama drop just one spot in the BCS rankings after the Tide's kicker lost to LSU's kicker 9-6 last Saturday.

Despite the fact that the pollsters have shown some bias towards the SEC, the Sooners are still in a good position. With just a little help the Sooners may just find themselves playing for the program's eighth national championship in January.

The bias and slanted media coverage towards the SEC, and specifically LSU and Alabama, has gotten a little out of control.

There has already been a push from most of the media, mainly ESPN, for there to be an Alabama/LSU rematch for the national championship. This is just ridiculous.

Alabama couldn't beat them in Tuscaloosa. What makes anybody think they are going to win with LSU basically playing at home?

The other joke in all this has to do with all the "Game of the Century" talk. That suggestion alone is disrespectful to Oklahoma and Nebraska.

What the rest of the country should have taken from this game was that neither team can even read an offensive playbook, never mind execute it.

When do we stop confusing horrible offense for great defense? This is what the SEC has become. Let's not forget that most conference rankings have the Big 12 ranked ahead of the SEC.

Don't believe the talk that Oklahoma would not have a chance to pass Alabama in the BCS rankings if they were to beat Oklahoma State. It may be close, and the Tide may come out ahead of the Sooners, but there is still at least a good chance for Oklahoma to jump Alabama in the end.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind.

For one, the Sooners are right on the heels of Alabama in the computer rankings. Oklahoma has an average computer ranking of fifth while Alabama is third. But, Oklahoma is already ahead of the Tide in two of the polls and just one spot back in another.

Oklahoma's computer ranking is only going to get better if they can beat Oklahoma State and Baylor on the road, who by the way is also in the BCS rankings at 25th. Meanwhile, Alabama lacks the schedule down the stretch to see any improvement in their computer rankings.

Games with Mississippi State and Georgia Southern will hurt Alabama and by the time they meet up with Auburn, they could be playing a team with four losses.

Alabama fans will argue that their loss to LSU is better than Oklahoma's loss to Texas Tech.

The argument for Sooner fans will be that it isn't always just about who you lost to; it should also be about who you beat. And, outside of Arkansas, who has Alabama beat?

With a win in Stillwater, the Sooners would be the only team to have beaten four teams ranked in the Top 10 and all away from home. A win at Baylor will only add another win over a ranked team on the road to the Sooners' resume.

Keep in mind that the Tide being ranked so high in the human polls may actually help Oklahoma. This has to do with Oklahoma's other roadblock: Stanford.

Alabama's stature in the polls is hurting Stanford's overall BCS score. If this continues, the Sooners might not need the Cardinal to lose in order to jump past them in the rankings. However, the best scenario for Oklahoma is still for Oregon to beat Stanford this Saturday.

Oh, that's right. There's still that Oregon Ducks team that Oklahoma fans might be worried about. Those concerns can be put to bed right now.

The Sooners have a comfortable lead over the Ducks in the computers and are catching them in the human polls. A win at Oklahoma State will prove to be better in the end than an Oregon win at Stanford.

Baylor being ranked 25th will also play a roll. That's because an Oklahoma win at Baylor will have a bigger impact in the BCS rankings than an Oregon win at home against an unranked Arizona State or UCLA team in the Pac-12 Championship.

All of these scenarios are fun to talk about and debate, but there are still a few things that could make things even more confusing.

What if LSU were to lose, especially in the SEC Championship to Georgia? What if Oklahoma State loses before Bedlam? And, by the way, you never know what will happen when Alabama and Auburn get together.

It's going to be a fun stretch run and just about anything could happen. How do you like the BCS now?
