LSU vs Alabama: Why an Overtime Game Was the Only Way to Set Up a BCS Rematch
After several weeks building up the hype, the game of the century has come and gone. It lasted about three hours and if you were expecting a defensive showdown, you found exactly what you wanted. Despite the fact that Alabama's special teams wasn't so special, the game did live up to the hype.
Going into this game, many fans thought these were the best two teams in the country and were wondering how they could possibly have a rematch in the national championship.
If you are one of the people who are hoping for a rematch, a 9-6 overtime victory is exactly what you could have hoped for. The game couldn't have ended any better if you would like to see these two teams square off again—unless you're an Alabama fan of course.
Just look at the latest BCS Rankings and you'll see that Alabama only fell one spot in the rankings to No. 3.
The Crimson Tide are only behind in the polls Oklahoma State, which still have to play a feisty Texas Tech team and Oklahoma at the end of the season.
There's a good chance that the Cowboys could end up with a loss, and that would probably drop them behind Alabama in the polls.
Alabama shouldn't have to worry about Stanford that much because of their weak schedule. Even if the Cardinal runs the table this season, you could make an argument that a one-loss Alabama team has a more impressive resume.
But, of course, a loss against the Oregon Ducks this week wouldn't hurt.
Boise State is a non-threat to make the national championship as they can't seem to jump anybody in the rankings no matter what they do.
Then, of course, you have Oklahoma, which still has to play Baylor and Oklahoma State. If the Sooners run the table, they would be the biggest competition for Alabama and that last spot in the national championship.
Alabama went toe-to-toe with the top team in the country and only lost by a field goal in overtime. If you wanted to see a rematch, there's a good possibility that it could happen.
A few things still need to fall in place, but it's looking a lot better than the odds did before the game started.
