BCS Rankings: Penn State and More Overrated Big 10 Teams

Eric BallNov 6, 2011

SEC fans love saying it, and it looks like once again the statement rings true. The Big 10 is overrated.

By my calculation, only No. 17 Michigan State and No. 18 Wisconsin are decent teams in the conference. Yet there are currently five ranked by the BCS computers in the top 25.

Blasphemy!

Here's why these three teams have no business being ranked so high:

No. 12 Penn State Nittany Lions

The Penn State offense is ranked 100th in the nation, averaging just over 21 points a game. Yet somehow they are knocking on the door of the top 10.

Don't get comfortable, Penn State.

While wins at home against Illinois and at Northwestern are decent, they were smashed 27-11 by Alabama in their only game against a ranked opponent.

Now they play the three hardest Big 10 games on the schedule to close the season. I'd guess that the Nittany Lions drop two of three to No. 19 Nebraska, Ohio State and No. 18 Wisconsin.

They'll be knocked  back to the bottom 20s in the BCS, a place this team deserves to be.

No. 19 Nebraska Cornhuskers

Aside from a sound 24-3 beatdown of No. 17 Michigan State, the Cornhuskers haven't really impressed this season.

Sophomore QB Taylor Martinez isn't making the sort of progressions fans expected he would make in year two. He has thrown for a mere 1,545 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Sure the running game led by Rex Burkhead has been excellent (951 yards, 13 TDs), but the Cornhuskers need more balance.

Considering they are about to play the third ranked, No. 12 Penn State defense on the road next, they better figure it out in a hurry.

No. 24 Michigan Wolverines

This team is without a doubt not one of the best 25 teams in the country. QB Denard Robinson is a horrible passer and opponents are starting to realize as much. It's beginning to really effect his ability to scramble in the pocket.

The Wolverines have been a fixture in the BCS poll because they keep winning. With an incredibly soft schedule, the wins came easy.

With a road game against Illinois, and home contests against No. 19 Nebraska and Ohio State still on tap, the Wolverines are in a world of trouble.

All three defenses are extremely well-coached and feature players that are disciplined. They won't fall for all of Michigan's fakes and misdirections.

This team will plummet down the rankings in the next couple of weeks.
