BCS Rankings: Oklahoma State Offense vs LSU Defense: Who Comes Out on Top?

Matt ShetlerNov 6, 2011

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?

According to the latest release of the BCS Standings, we will get the opportunity to find out in January in the BCS Championship Game.

As expected following the weekend action, LSU remained ranked No. 1, while the new No. 2 ranked team is Oklahoma State.

Both teams control their own destiny on the path to a championship, and if both win out, fans will be treated to a matchup of probably the best offense in the game today against probably the best defense.

In that scenario, who has the edge?

First let's look at the numbers.

Oklahoma State Offense

Total Offense: 5,016 yards (ranked 2nd in the nation)

Yards per Game: 557.3 (3rd)

Passing: 396.8 (2nd)

Rushing: 169.8 (46th)

Points per Game: 50.1 (2nd)

LSU Defense

Total Defense: 262.2 (3rd)

Passing: 177.4 (9th)

Rushing: 78.8 (2nd)

Points per Game: 10.1 (2nd)

These are impressive numbers on both sides, but if I have to pick one unit I'm going with the LSU defense for a couple of reasons.

For one, LSU has seen some good offenses while playing in the SEC and have done their job to stop them. Maybe they haven't seen something as powerful as the Oklahoma State offense, but they won't be in awe of it by any means.

On the other hand, playing in the Big 12 Conference, the Cowboys have been able to let their offense do the work against defenses that are nowhere near the caliber of LSU's.

Another reason is that the LSU secondary is just so talented. They have playmakers and future NFL stars everywhere. Eric Reid, Morris Claiborne, Tyrann Mathieu and company have the ability to take any receiver out of the game.

Even though Justin Blackmon has as much talent as any receiver in the nation, I have to give the edge to the LSU secondary.

As far as running the ball, I wouldn't give Joseph Randle much chance of having a good game against the LSU front seven.

Looking at OSU quarterback Brandon Weeden, he's had a monster couple of seasons and is having a record-breaking type of campaign in 2011. But his Achilles heel is that he's prone to throwing an interception or two, and that's where the LSU defense will get you.

This is surely a potential BCS Championship Game to look forward to, but if I have to pick one unit to win the game, I'm going with the LSU defense every day of the week.
