College Football: Heisman Trophy Watch Heading into Week 11
Another week of college football is in the books and the closer we get towards the end of the season, the clearer the Heisman Trophy picture becomes.
Injuries and poor performances have knocked a couple guys off the list, while several others seem set in their positions.
As we head to Week 11 of the college football season, let's take a look at the Top 10 contenders for the Heisman Trophy.
10. Tajh Boyd
1 of 10Last Week: Bye
2011 Stats: 2,674 passing yards, 25 touchdowns passing, 4 touchdowns rushing
Boyd edges out teammate Sammy Watkins and Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden for the 10th spot in this week's rankings. Clemson didn't play this week and are coming off their first loss of the season to Georgia Tech.
9. Matt Barkley
2 of 10Last Week: 318 passing yards, 6 touchdowns in 42-17 win vs. Colorado
2011 Stats: 2,608 passing yards, 26 touchdowns
Barkley put his name in the USC record book with a six-touchdown performance against Colorado. In the Year of the Quarterback, Barkley is just one of several talented signal callers having excellent seasons.
It's doubtful Barkley returns for his senior season, but if he does, he could head this list next season.
8. Robert Griffin III
3 of 10Last Week: 406 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, 64 rushing yards, 1 touchdown in 42-39 win over Missouri
2011 Stats: 2,375 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, 322 rushing yards, 3 rushing touchdowns
Griffin's stock for the Heisman has taken a bit of a hit lately with each Baylor loss, but he was outstanding in the Bears win over Missouri.
If he has a big close to the season, he may be able to sneak back into the race.
7. Robert Woods
4 of 10Last Week: 9 receptions, 130 yards, 2 touchdowns in 42-17 win over Colorado
2011 Stats: 90 receptions, 1,121 yards, 11 touchdowns
Woods keeps building on a tremendous 2011 season and leads the nation in both receptions and yardage for a USC team that is having a very good season.
6. Russell Wilson
5 of 10Last Week: 205 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 76 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown in 62-17 win over Purdue.
2011 Stats: 2,033 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 200 rushing yards, 3 rushing touchdowns
Just a couple weeks ago, Wilson was sitting right at the top of this list—after a pair of Wisconsin losses, he has made the slide down to No. 6.
He's another guy who could make a climb back into contention with a big finish to the season.
5. Case Keenum
6 of 10Last Week: 407 passing yards, 2 touchdowns passing, 2 touchdowns rushing in 56-13 win over UAB
2011 Stats: 3,219 passing yards, 32 touchdowns
Some may think this is too high for Keenum, but he should likely be even a couple spots higher on the list.
Keenum has thrown more touchdown passes in his last three games than 91-of-120 FBS teams have thrown all season. In the past two weeks, he's become the all-time FBS leader in TD passes and total offense and has the Cougars unbeaten at 9-0.
4. Kellen Moore
7 of 10Last Week: 219 passing yards, 5 touchdowns
2011 Stats: 2,010 passing yards, 24 touchdowns (before Week 10 game vs. UNLV)
Moore had a big night in the Broncos win over UNLV and still has an outside chance to head to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremonies.
With Boise State still hanging around in the BCS Championship picture, more attention could be paid to Moore over the next few weeks. If he were to make a move up the standings, now may be the perfect time.
3. Landry Jones
8 of 10Last Week: 255 passing yards, 2 touchdowns in 41-25 win over Texas A&M
2011 Stats: 3,094 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, 2 rushing touchdowns
Jones has the numbers, but despite throwing a couple more touchdown passes in Oklahoma's victory over Texas A&M, he completed less than 50 percent of his passes.
He also lost favorite target Ryan Broyles to a knee injury, so it will be worth paying attention to how Jones finishes up the rest of the season.
2. Trent Richardson
9 of 10Last Week: 89 rushing yards, 80 receiving yards in 9-6 loss to LSU
2011 Stats: 989 rushing yards, 17 touchdowns, 212 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns
Despite the Alabama loss, I'm not dropping Richardson from the No. 2 spot just yet. He's put together a great season to date and still put up over 160 combined yards against an LSU defense.
What he failed to do though, was capitalize on a golden opportunity to steal some of the thunder away from Andrew Luck.
1. Andrew Luck
10 of 10Last Week: 206 passing yards, 3 touchdowns in 38-13 win over Oregon state
2011 Stats: 2,218 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, 119 rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns
Luck has been the front runner from day one, and as long as he keeps playing good football and Stanford keeps on winning, then he's likely to stay right at the top of the list.
