Liverpool FC Transfer Talk: 4 English Players Kenny Dalglish Should Target

Chris SiddellNov 2, 2011

What English talent should Liverpool FC boss Kenny Dalglish look to as he continues to build his squad in the next transfer window?

Liverpool already have some of the best English talent around, and should strengthenย theirย squad with more homegrown players.

Here are some of the top English players that Dalglish should target as he moves to challenge for silverware.

4. Connor Wickham

Connor Wickham just moved to Sunderland in the summer, but any player with ambition would find it hard to turn down a move to Liverpool.

Sunderland have an interesting record with forwards in recent years, letting a few great players move on, and Wickham would be no different.

As strong forward with some pace, Wickham would work well alongside either Luis Saurez or Andy Carroll. At just 18 years old, he could be a long-term asset to the club.

Wickham is definitely one English guy King Kenny should consider, although he won't be top of the list.

3. Gary Cahill

Bolton defender Gary Cahill is hot property at the minute, with Arsenal very keen on the England international. ย

With Jamie Carragher coming up on the end of his career, Cahill would be a great signing.ย  Cahill could come into the defence to provide a sturdy English rearguard for King Kenny as Carragher moves towards retirement.

He won't come cheap, and Liverpool will have to sell themselves to Cahill, but that shouldn't be a problem for a club with big ambitions.

2. Darren Bent

3 of 4

Darren Bent is a pure goal scorer. ย Every team needs goal scorers.ย

When Bent left Sunderland, he cited a desire to play alongside some more creative influences, but since then Ashley Young and Stewart Downing have both left.

Carroll and Suarez are already at Liverpoolโ€”imagine adding Darren Bent to that front line.

Whether he plays with either of those two, or as a third striker, Bent will be a huge step up in terms of class and scoring ability on Craig Bellamy. ย

King Kenny has two big name strikers, but a third would be a huge benefit and could help Liverpool challenge on multiple fronts.

1. Jack Butland

4 of 4

Jack Butland may not be a household name yet, but he will be.

The 18-year-old has represented England at various levels since the Under-16s, and now finds himself as first choice goalkeeper for the Under-21 squad, despite his young age.

Signing the youngster from Birmingham shouldn't be a big problem. Now is the time to get him, before he draws too much attention from other clubs.

Pepe Reina still has a few years left in him, but could easily become a target for another big European club. ย Having Butland as an understudy means Liverpool could cash in on Reina and still have Butland on the team to challenge Joe Hart for the England jersey.
