College Football Rankings 2011: Top 25 Quarterbacks Heading into Week 10
Like the BCS and, well, college football as a whole, the Quarterback Scramble, my weekly rankings of the best signal callers in the country, have proven to be volatile and subject to big changes each time out as a result.
Though, if you've been following along, you've probably noticed by now.
But now that we're entering the final full month of the 2011 season, it's time for the cream of the crop to put their noses to the grindstone while they gun for that No. 1 spot.
So, without further ado, let's have a look at the top QBs in the country heading into November.
Who's Out?
1 of 27Only two youngsters had the unfortunate distinction of dropping from the Top 25 this week. I'll have my eyes on them in Week 10, so don't be surprised if either of these guys finds his way back in before too long.
19. Taylor Martinez, Nebraska: 7-of-13 for 80 yards, one touchdown and one interception, with 12 carries for 23 yards rushing, in a 24-3 win over Michigan State.
1,256 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions on 54.9 percent pass completions; 122 carries for 659 yards and nine touchdowns rushing in 2011
24. Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech: 17-of-28 for 190 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, with 10 carries for 27 yards rushing, in a 14-10 victory at Duke.
1,934 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 60.9 percent pass completions; 87 carries for 285 yards and six touchdowns rushing in 2011
Honorable Mentions
2 of 27Six seems to be the magic number when it comes to picking out the proper number of Honorable Mentions to hand out each week.
Not that I'll artificially limit myself from honoring great performances from quarterbacks who don't necessarily warrant inclusion among the Top 25.
But, for the sake of making this list semi-meaningful, I'll do my best not to include every kid who racks up 300 yards passing on any given Saturday.
Jacory Harris, Miami: 21-of-30 for 311 yards and three touchdowns, with six carries for 22 yards rushing, in a 28-21 loss to Virginia.
1,555 yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions on 63.4 percent pass completions in 2011
Tre Roberson, Indiana: 14-of-26 for 169 yards, one touchdown and one interception, with 22 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown rushing, in a 59-38 loss to Northwestern.
524 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 59.7 percent pass completions; 62 carries for 267 yards and two touchdowns rushing in 2011
Clint Moseley, Auburn: 12-of-15 for 160 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-23 victory over Ole Miss.
425 yards, four touchdowns and one interception on 68.2 percent pass completions in 2011
Tino Sunseri, Pittsburgh: 29-of-42 for 419 yards and two touchdowns, with 12 carries for 40 yards and one touchdown rushing, in a 35-20 win over Connecticut.
1,623 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions on 62.9 percent pass completions; 82 carries for 51 yards and two touchdowns rushing in 2011
Zac Dysert, Miami (OH): 20-of-25 for 313 yards, five touchdowns and an interception, with six carries for 39 yards, in a 41-13 win over Buffalo.
2,149 yards, 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 62.5 percent pass completions; 67 carries for 33 yards and two touchdowns rushing in 2011
Brett Smith, Wyoming: 25-of-36 for 341 yards and two touchdowns, with 16 carries for 24 yards and two touchdowns rushing, in a 30-27 win over San Diego State.
1,665 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions on 60.7 percent pass completions; 69 carries for 235 yards and six touchdowns rushing in 2011
25. Cody Fajardo, Nevada
3 of 27I'm not sure Cody Fajardo is going to stick for long (hence the No. 25 ranking), but he certainly deserves an extra bit of love from the QB Scramble after checking in as an Honorable Mention in each of the last two weeks.
The freshman from Brea, California ascended into the starting role for Nevada in early October and has strutted hit stuff quite nicely from week to week. Fajardo flummoxed New Mexico State for 283 yards passing and 60 yards rushing, along with four touchdowns on the ground, in a 48-34 win for the Wolfpack.
He'll look to keep the party going on Saturday against Hawaii at Mackay Stadium in Reno.
965 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions on 70.8 percent pass completions; 68 carries for 444 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing in 2011
24. James Franklin, Missouri
4 of 27James Franklin's roller coaster season took another upturn on Saturday. Not only did he lead Missouri to a 38-31 overtime win against potential future SEC foe Texas A&M at Kyle Field.
He also boosted his own profile, connecting on 16-of-24 attempts for 198 yards and two touchdowns, along with 24 carries for 97 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground, albeit against a so-so Aggies defense.
Expect more fireworks to come when Mizzou drops in to Waco to play Baylor this weekend.
1,870 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 60.8 percent pass completions; 133 carries for 542 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: not ranked
23. GJ Kinne, Tulsa
5 of 27GJ Kinne did just enough to not only stay in the Top 25, but move up a coupe spots. Kinne led Tulsa to a convincing 38-7 win over Southern Methodist in Conference USA play, throwing for 274 yards, a touchdown and an interception while running for another 39 yards and a score.
He and the Golden Hurricane will head to the Sunshine State to take on Central Florida on Thursday.
1,895 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 64.3 percent pass completions; 73 carries for 217 yards and two touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: 25th
22. AJ McCarron, Alabama
6 of 27My guess is, AJ McCarron didn't get too much rest this week, what with all the hype surrounding this weekend's Game of the Century between Alabama and LSU in Tuscaloosa.
A big performance by McCarron against the Tigers' vaunted defense will undoubtedly vault him up the list.
1,983 yards, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions on 64.1 percent pass completions; 72 carries for 258 yards and five touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: 22nd
21. Tyler Tettleton, Ohio
7 of 27Tyler Tettleton has tormented opposing defenses all season while leading Frank Solich's Bobcats to a solid campaign in the Mid-American Conference. His run continued on Wednesday against Temple, when he tallied 15 completions on 24 attempts for 258 yards and three touchdowns through air, along with 11 carries for 29 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Tettleton's terrific tale of, errr, temptation (abort alliteration...NNNNOW!) will continue (dangit!) on Thursday, November 10th at Central Michigan.
2,241 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions on 64 percent pass completions; 83 carries for 287 yards and six touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: 23rd
20. Keith Price, Washington
8 of 27Keith Price didn't do himself or his teammates any favors in Washington's 42-31 win over Arizona.
Price was picked off three times while completing just 16 of his 30 pass attempts, though he did also manage scrounge up 277 yards and a touchdown through the air.
The Huskies will hope Price is right when Oregon trips up to Seattle for a Pac-12 shootout on Saturday.
1,990 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 66.5 percent pass completions in 2011
Last week's ranking: 16th
19. Denard Robinson, Michigan
9 of 27Like Price's Huskies, Denard Robinson's Wolverines prevailed against a lesser opponent despite his tough day on the gridiron.
Robinson wrangled up 170 yards and an interception on 9-of-14 passing to go along with 63 yards and one touchdown rushing in Michigan's 36-14 romp against Purdue.
He'll be hanging onto his place in the Top 25 by a thread—nay, a Shoelace—if he comes up with a poor performance at Iowa this weekend.
1,325 yards, 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 53.5 percent pass completions; 127 carries for 779 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: 14th
18. Seth Doege, Texas Tech
10 of 27Oh, to be young and play football.
One week, you're Seth Doege, throwing for 441 yards and piling up five total touchdowns to lead Texas Tech to a shocking upset of Oklahoma in Norman. The next, you're Seth Doege, completing just half of your passes for 171 yards and two picks in a 41-7 home loss to Iowa State.
I certainly wouldn't want to be that guy, especially with a trip to Texas coming up on Saturday.
2,779 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions on 67.9 percent pass completions; 42 carries for 67 yards and three touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: 10th
17. Geno Smith, West Virginia
11 of 27West Virginia needed a lift after last week's disappointing loss at Syracuse, and Geno Smith helped to provide that somewhat. Smith strung together 20 completions on 31 pass attempts for 218 yards and three total touchdowns to lead the Mountaineers to a 41-31 win over Rutgers.
Next on the docket is a Big East battle with Louisville on Saturday.
2,715 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions on 63.3 percent pass completions in 2011
Last week's ranking: 13th
16. Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M
12 of 27Ryan Tannehill may not be happy with the ultimate result from Saturday's overtime loss to Missouri, but at least he had a strong individual performance to show for it. Tannehill tossed 53 passes, completing 35 of them, for 317 yards, three touchdowns (four, including one with his feet) and an interception in the defeat.
Next up, he'll look to call upon his inner Seth Doege as he guides the Aggies into Norman against Oklahoma this weekend.
2,322 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 65.4 percent pass completions; 39 carries for 227 yards and four touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: 21st
15. Zach Collaros, Cincinnati
13 of 27Zach Collaros and Cincinnati had the week off, just in time to prepare for a tough trip to Pittsburgh this weekend.
1,576 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions on 64.0 percent pass completions; 61 carries for 225 yards and six touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: 15th
14. Brock Osweiler, Arizona State
14 of 27Like so many quarterbacks this season, Brock Osweiler had a comfortable day against Colorado's defense. The big Montanan collected 307 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-28 passing in a 48-14 win for Arizona State.
Osweiler will look to tee-off against a banged-up UCLA secondary at the Rose Bowl on Saturday to keep the Sun Devils atop the Pac-12 South.
2,275 yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions on
Last week's ranking: 20th
13. Tyler Wilson, Arkansas
15 of 27Another week, another unnecessary nailbiter for Tyler Wilson and Arkansas. This time, Wilson wound up with 316 yards and a touchdown on 27-of-43 passing in a 31-28 win at Vanderbilt.
The Razorbacks will need to play just a bit better overall to beat South Carolina in Fayetteville this weekend.
2,327 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions on 62.7 percent pass completions in 2011
Last week's ranking: 17th
12. Tajh Boyd, Clemson
16 of 27'Twas a rough day, indeed, for Tajh Boyd and Clemson this past Saturday. The Tigers registered their first defeat of the season, 31-17 at Georgia Tech, amidst Boyd's 295-yard, one-touchdown, two-interception performance.
He and his teammates will look to rebound back in Death Valley against Wake Forest on November 12th.
2,674 yards, 25 touchdowns and five interceptions on 61.3 percent pass completions; 89 carries for 164 yards and four touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: sixth
11. Nick Foles, Arizona
17 of 27Nick Foles' season seems to have taken a turn for the worst, only a month or two after Arizona's went off the deep end entirely. Foles flicked three interceptions in a loss to Washington, but, on the bright side, still notched 388 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
He and the Wildcats should find life a bit easier against Utah on Saturday.
2,934 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 70.0 percent pass completions in 2011
Last week's ranking: 12th
10. Dominique Davis, East Carolina
18 of 27What doesn't Dominique Davis do? He dazzles, he dodges, he ducks, he dips, he dives AND he dodges (right?).
More importantly, he tears ECU's opponents to shreds, as he did to Tulane, when he threw for 329 yards, a touchdown and a pick and ran for another 43 yards and two scores.
A win over the Southern Mississippi Fightin' Favres on Saturday would put the Pirates into pole position in Conference USA's East division.
2,342 yards, 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 70.4 percent pass completions; 48 carries for 15 yards and four touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: 18th
9. Bryant Moniz, Hawaii
19 of 27Bryant Moniz? He's not Drew Brees, but he still aims to please, even if Hawaii has to freeze.
(Bonus points!)
Moniz was money for the Warriors at Idaho, throwing for 338 yards with a touchdown and a pick to vanquish the Vandals, 16-14.
For his next trick, Moniz will make the Utah State defense disappear on Sunday.
2,483 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions on 62.8 percent pass completions; 68 carries for 224 yards and six touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: ninth
8. Matt Barkley, USC
20 of 27Matt Barkley came close to being a hero at USC. Instead, he finds himself with just another fine performance, though in a disappointing loss.
Clock issues or no, Barkley balled up Stanford on Saturday for 284 yards, three touchdowns and one pick on 28-of-45 passing in what turned out to be a loss in a 56-48 triple overtime instant classic.
He'll get better overall results in Boulder against lowly Colorado on Friday.
2,290 yards, 22 touchdowns and five interceptions on 67.3 percent pass completions in 2011
Last week's ranking: 11th
7. Kellen Moore, Boise State
21 of 27Less was, indeed, more for Kellen Moore in Week 9, seeing as how Boise State didn't play and all.
He'll do plenty to stay in the Top 10 against an oft-victimized UNLV squad on Saturday.
2,010 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions on 76.3 percent pass completions in 2011
Last week's ranking: seventh
6. Russell Wilson, Wisconsin
22 of 27It was the best of times, and then it was the worst of times...for the Wisconsin Badgers.
Russell Wilson did his best to get his team back on track, throwing for 253 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to overcome Ohio State in a 33-29 road loss.
The BCS title may be out of reach, but the Badgers can still capture the Big Ten if they get back on track against Purdue on Saturday.
2,033 yards, 19 touchdowns and three interceptions on 71.3 percent pass completions; 38 carries for 200 yards and three touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: fifth
5. Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State
23 of 27Brandon Weeden was a big help to Oklahoma State in its blowout win over Baylor, 59-24. Weeden walloped the Bears for 274 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-36 passing in Waco.
Expect more of the same when Kansas State comes to Stillwater on Saturday.
2,710 yards, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 71.3 percent pass completions in 2011
Last week's ranking: eighth
4. Robert Griffin III, Baylor
24 of 27Opposite Weeden was Robert Griffin III, who was pretty darn good for Baylor but not quite good enough to help his squad overcome the best of the best in the Big 12.
Griffin gathered 425 yards and two total touchdowns, though the Pokes' defense also prodded him into two interceptions.
RG3 will once again be in good conference company when he faces off with James Franklin and Mizzou this weekend.
2,375 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions on 75.4 percent pass completions; 88 carries for 322 yards and three touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: third
3. Andrew Luck, Stanford
25 of 27I could fill an entire 50-page slideshow with superlatives to describe Andrew Luck's performance at USC last Saturday, but I'll spare you that torture...for now, at least.
Luck logged 330 yards, three touchdowns and an interception through the air, along with 36 yards and one score on the ground, to lead Stanford to a thrilling 56-48 triple-overtime win over the Trojans at the dilapidated LA Coliseum.
A matchup with the lowly Beavers in Pac-12 play this weekend should provide Luck with an excellent opportunity to roll up some stats before sitting out for, let's say, a half.
2,218 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions on 71.9 percent pass completions; 25 carries for 119 yards and two touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: second
2. Landry Jones, Oklahoma
26 of 27Landry Jones has really created a logjam of sorts atop the QB Scramble in recent weeks. He jumped into the top spot in the last edition, though in a losing effort, and actually dropped (however slightly) after lighting up Kansas State for 505 yards, five touchdowns and two picks in a convincing 58-17 win for Oklahoma in Manhattan.
He'll have the Sooners booming again when Texas A&M comes to Norman on Saturday.
3,094 yards, 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 66.5 percent pass completions; 14 carries for 22 yards and two touchdowns rushing in 2011
Last week's ranking: first
1. Case Keenum, Houston
27 of 27If 534 yards and nine touchdowns doesn't get someone to the top of the QB Scramble in a hurry, then I don't know what will.
That was more than enough to launch Case Keenum into the No. 1 (stunna (wh-what wh-what what?)) position on the charts.
Let's see, then, what, if anything, UAB can do to cool off Houston's hot hand and Heisman hopeful this weekend.
3,219 yards, 32 touchdowns and three interceptions on 71.9 percent pass completions in 2011
Last week's ranking: fourth
