The 50 Most Disappointing Players of the NFL's First Half

Tony SantorsaNov 1, 2011

You could say that this year's version of the NFL has been one of the greatest seasons in recent memories—but this certainly isn't every single player's best season. In fact, there are quite a handful of players that aren't just underachieving but are just flat-out playing putrid.

With that being said, Peyton Hillis, Chris Johnson and Chad Ochocinco a few players that come to mind—so who else makes the cut?

Here are the 50 most disappointing players of the NFL's first half.

Julian Edelman

1 of 50

Julian Edelman certainly has more problems than struggling on the field, as he was recently arrested for possible charges of sexual assault

As we put that aside for now, Edelman literally has done nothing for the New England Patriots this season.

The third-year wide receiver has played in only four games this season and racked up just three receptions for 35 yards.

Ronnie Brown

2 of 50

What has Ronnie Brown done thus far this season for the Philadelphia Eagles? Well, virtually nothing.

Brown was actually involved in a trade that was ultimately shot down due to James Harrison's unfortunate brain tumor.

Brown has appeared in seven games for Philly this season, tallying only 42 yards rushing while not scoring a single touchdown.

Andre Johnson

3 of 50

How has Andre Johnson been disappointing this season? For starters he has played in only four games this season for the Houston Texans as he left Week 4's battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers with a hamstring injury and has yet to play on the field since.

Johnson has put up decent stats as he's caught 25 passes for 352 yards but only two touchdowns.

Matt Cassel

4 of 50

Matt Cassel has certainly had an up-and-down first half to the 2011 season for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cassel and the Chiefs started off with a pitiful 0-3 record but have won four straight games.

In seven games this season, Cassel has recorded a 79.0 quarterback rating while throwing nine touchdowns and nine interceptions and completing 62.9 percent of his passes.

Prince Amukamara

5 of 50

Who knows how well Prince Amukamara could be playing right now for the New York Giants, but the fact is that he's yet to play a single game this season.

Amukamara fractured his foot during the team's training camp and has yet to play since.

Nate Burleson

6 of 50

Nate Burleson compared himself to Wes Welker just about a month ago, but hasn't really lived up to his expectations.

Burleson hasn't even come close to putting up Welker-like numbers as he only has 26 receptions for 245 yards and just one touchdown.

Tony Romo

7 of 50

The Dallas Cowboys have been extremely disappointing this season and it all leads back to their starting quarterback, Tony Romo

Romo has played well at times but when the team has needed him the most, he's been ineffective and often has thrown costly interceptions.

Nick Fairley

8 of 50

So much for being a member of the Silver Crush; Nick Fairley hasn't been on the field enough to even make an impact.

Fairley was the team's first overall pick in this year's draft and has been a huge disappointment as he's played in only three games and has recorded just one single tackle.

Jerod Mayo

9 of 50

Jerod Mayo led the league in tackles last season with an incredible 174 tackles but hasn't been on the field enough to even come close to that total.

Mayo suffered a sprained MCL against the Oakland Raiders a few weeks ago and played his first game following the injury this past weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mayo has accumulated 27 tackles and no sacks this season for the New England Patriots.

Anquan Boldin

10 of 50

Say what you want about Anquan Boldin, but in my opinion he has yet to impress as a member of the Baltimore Ravens—perhaps it's just not the right fit.

Boldin is supposed to be the team's No. 1 wide receiver but has caught only two touchdown passes, with one coming late in the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars when the defense was in prevent mode.

Chris Johnson

11 of 50

In my opinion, Chris Johnson has been the biggest bust this season.

CJ2K has been flat-out dreadful for the Tennessee Titans as he's only accumulated 302 yards on the ground in seven games while scoring just a single touchdown.

With a pitiful 2.8 yards per carry, there is no way that Johnson will even come close to 1,000 yards on the season.

Bernard Berrian

12 of 50

What happened to Bernard Berrian? He was an above-average wide receiver but hasn't been anything special this season for the Minnesota Vikings—in fact, he's been awful.

As he's been so awful, the Minnesota Vikings decided to release the wide receiver a week ago.

Mario Williams

13 of 50

It's a real shame that Mario Williams is on injured reserve with a torn pectoral as I was personally expecting big things out of him this season as an outside linebacker in Wade Phillips' 3-4 defensive scheme.

Williams played in only five games this season for Houston but did record a solid five sacks.

The Tennessee Titans' Entire Offensive Line

14 of 50

How putrid has the Tennessee Titans' offensive line been this season? For starters, let's acknowledge that the Titans have arguably the NFL's top running back in Chris Johnson, but still haven't been able to find a consistent ground game.

The Titans are currently the worst rushing team in the entire league.

Donovan McNabb

15 of 50

Do I really need to explain this one?

Donovan McNabb was brought into Minnesota to be a bridge from now into the future with the rookie Christian Ponder—that plan obviously failed.

McNabb been ultimately ineffective during his time at quarterback for the Vikings this season.

Philip Rivers

16 of 50

If you were able to watch Monday Night Football this week, then you are well aware of Philip Rivers' struggles this season. In fact, I like to refer to Rivers as the AFC version of Tony Romo, as he threw the game away against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Rivers has been so inconsistent this season for the San Diego Chargers as he's thrown seven touchdowns and an embarrassing 11 interceptions.

Kyle Orton

17 of 50

Kyle Orton has been so ineffective this season that he was pulled in favor of Tim Tebow

Prior to being benched, Orton had posted a 75.7 quarterback rating while completing 58.7 percent of his passes for only 979 yards.

Sam Bradford

18 of 50

So much for being reigning rookie of the year. Sam Bradford has been a complete bust this season for the St. Louis Rams. In fact the only game that the Rams won this season was one of the two games that Bradford hasn't played in.

Bradford has completed only 53.1 percent of his passes while being picked off three times and tossing only two touchdowns.

Mike Sims-Walker

19 of 50

Mike Sims-Walker has been so awful this season that the St. Louis Rams actually released him despite being the team's only legitimate No. 1 wide receiver.

Sims-Walker had a solid 2010 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars but failed to score a single touchdown with the Rams this season.

After being cut, Sims-Walker has rejoined the Jaguars and has played in two games for them this season.

Reggie Bush

20 of 50

Reggie Bush was brought into Miami to be a possible every-down running back but clearly the New Orleans Saints were right: Bush should not be playing running back, but at wide receiver.

Bush has played in all seven games this season for the Dolphins as he's accumulated just 335 yards on the ground and scoring a total of one single touchdown.

Jamaal Charles

21 of 50

Jamaal Charles has been especially disappointing to me, as I actually selected him in the first round in one of my fantasy drafts—thanks a lot, Jamaal.

Charles was placed on Kansas City's injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL in the team's 48-3 loss against the Detroit Lions during Week 2.

Mario Manningham

22 of 50

Mario Manningham had a solid season for the New York Giants a year ago as he caught 60 passes for 944 yards and nine touchdowns, but he has simply not been the same this season.

Manningham may have 24 receptions for 290 yards, but he has caught only one touchdown.

Ryan Mathews

23 of 50

Ryan Mathews has put up decent numbers this season for the San Diego Chargers as he's averaging 4.6 yards per carry but really hasn't developed into a leader.

In January, Mathews told NBC that he wanted to be more of a leader this season—what happened? He's by no means a leader.

Dallas Clark

24 of 50

You would think that Dallas Clark could have stepped up a little bit with Peyton Manning not playing this season for the Indianapolis Colts.

Clark has been a non-factor with Curtis Painter as quarterback as he's caught only 26 passes for only two touchdowns—definitely not the numbers that we're all used to Clark producing.

Joe Flacco

25 of 50

Wouldn't you have thought by now that Joe Flacco would be playing like one of the top players in the NFL? He has not.

Flacco is now playing in his fourth season and it's been arguably his worst. Flacco has completed only 53.8 percent of his passes, which is a career low, as well as posting a career-low 75.4 quarterback rating.

Chad Ochocinco

26 of 50

Chad Ochocinco has certainly not been the wide receiver that Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots were hoping for.

Ochocinco struggles to find playing time, and when he's on the field, he's been downright terrible. Ochocinco has caught nine passes for only 136 yards and zero touchdowns.

Kevin Kolb

27 of 50

Kevin Kolb was brought to Arizona to be the quarterback of the future and he has yet to develop into that role. Granted, this is Kolb's first true season as a starter, but he hasn't impressed.

Kolb has posted a 77.8 quarterback rating while being picked off eight times and completing only 56.8 percent of his passes.

Albert Haynesworth

28 of 50

Albert Haynesworth is by far one of the most overrated players in the entire NFL.

Haynesworth has had little, if any, impact with the New England Patriots this season—just ask any Patriots fan.

Plaxico Burress

29 of 50

I realize that Plaxico Burress is coming off of a near two-year jail sentence, but he hasn't been anything special for the New York Jets this season.

Burress' stats are definitely deceiving, as he's scored five touchdowns this season, but keep in mind that he has only caught 18 passes.

He isn't a big factor in New York's passing attack.

Nnamdi Asomugha

30 of 50

For the five-year, $60 million contract that the Philadelphia Eagles gave Nnamdi Asomugha, he simply has not been worth the money.

Asomugha has played relatively decent this year for Philly, but by no means is he worth that $60 million contract—he's been a huge disappointment.

Blaine Gabbert

31 of 50

You could make the argument that Blaine Gabbert is just a rookie and he's on a very bad football team—but he's been downright awful this season.

Gabbert is the future of the Jacksonville Jaguars, but his 45.7 completion percentage is definitely disappointing and extremely alarming.

Mark Sanchez

32 of 50

By now I'm sure that we have all expected Mark Sanchez to have taken some positive steps forward by now, but he hasn't really improved.

Sanchez has a pitiful 55.8 completion percentage this season, which is about one percent higher than his career average.

No. 6 has been completely inconsistent this season for the Jets, as the team ranks 29th in the NFL for total offense.

Mike Williams

33 of 50

Mike Williams had an incredible rookie season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he caught 11 touchdowns while accumulating 964 receiving yards.

2011 has been a complete different story for Williams as he's scored only one touchdown while racking up 317 receiving yards.

Could he have been a one-year wonder?

Michael Vick

34 of 50

Michael Vick has been disappointing this season? You bet he has.

Vick was one of the NFL's best quarterback last season as he finished with an incredible 100.2 quarterback rating—but he's not been the same quarterback this season.

It appears that Vick is reverting back to his old ways of tucking the ball and running far too soon before making of his reads.

No. 7 has a 90.0 quarterback rating thus far with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Kerry Collins

35 of 50

Kerry Collins? Why did he even bother coming out of retirement. I can only imagine how much he's second-guessing his decision to get up off of the couch and end up getting concussed with the Indianapolis Colts.

Before being placed on injured reserve, Collins recorded a 65.9 quarterback rating while completing only 49 percent of his passes.

This was definitely a bad decision by Kerry Collins.

Peyton Hillis

36 of 50

I am actually convinced the Madden curse actually exists—Peyton Hillis is a prime example.

After appearing on this year's addition of Madden, Hillis has appeared in only four games while averaging a dreadful 3.5 yards per carry and has scored a total of two touchdowns.

C.J. Spiller

37 of 50

C.J. Spiller was the Buffalo Bills' first-round draft choice just a year ago, when he had an awful rookie season.

Entering this season, many thought that Spiller would be able to turn it around—he has not. Spiller has only 107 rushing yards this season in seven games.

Thomas Jones

38 of 50

Ultimately, Thomas Jones is simply old and washed up.

At 33 years old, Jones has played in all of the Kansas City Chiefs' games this season but has only managed to muster 195 yards—that is completely embarrassing and disappointing.

Tim Hightower

39 of 50

Tim Hightower was brought to Washington to be inserted in Mike Shanahan's famous zone-blocking scheme.

In his first five games with the Redskins, Hightower ran for a solid 321 yards while scoring just one touchdown. In his fifth game, Hightower tore his ACL and has been placed on injured reserve.

Mark Ingram

40 of 50

Right now it appears that Mark Ingram was picked far too high by the New Orleans Saints at 28th overall. Ingram does have a role on the Saints' roster, but he's not performing at a level that a first-round running back should be.

The Alabama product has 329 yards this season and three touchdowns.

Shonn Greene

41 of 50

Shonn Greene had a very promising rookie season as he averaged 5.0 yards per carry, but now in this third year in the NFL, he's averaging only 3.8 yards per-carry.

Greene is a talented running back with loads of potential but he's been a complete disappointment for the New York Jets this season.

Braylon Edwards

42 of 50

Braylon Edwards simply cannot stay healthy for the San Francisco 49ers.

Many thought that Edwards would flourish as San Francisco's No. 1 wide receiver this season, but in just three games thus far, Edwards has only eight receptions and no touchdowns.

Colt McCoy

43 of 50

It may have been a bit unfair to place such high expectations on Colt McCoy, but he has all of the tools to be a successful quarterback in this league.

McCoy appears to be a winner and will find a way to win games ugly, but he hasn't been able to do so this season with the Cleveland Browns, posting a 3-4 record.

DeAngelo Williams

44 of 50

After signing a massive five-year, $43 million contract this past offseason with the Carolina Panthers, DeAngelo Williams has been a complete and utter bust.

Williams did not score his first touchdown until Week 5 as he's only accumulated 363 yards this season while averaging 4.8 yards per-carry.

Williams certainly started off slow, but has been coming on as of late, albeit with limited touches.

The Philadelphia Eagles' Entire Offensive Line

45 of 50

If you're even a casual fan of the NFL, then you must be well aware of how putrid Philadelphia's offensive line has been this season.

If you still have no idea, then ask Michael Vick how awful they have been—he's either on his back or running for his life.

Santonio Holmes

46 of 50

The New York Jets signed Santonio Holmes to a five-year, $42.25 million deal this past summer, thinking that he'd be one of the NFL's elite wide receivers, but he's been far from it this season.

In 2011, Holmes has only 22 receptions for 311 yards and just three touchdowns.

Holmes is extremely talented and has the potential to be the NFL's top wide receiver but this season has been a complete disappointment so far.

Josh Freeman

47 of 50

Josh Freeman had a phenomenal sophomore season, as he threw 25 touchdowns and only six interceptions—but 2011 has been a complete different story.

Freeman has been rather inconsistent for the 4-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as he's completed just 61.5 percent of his passes for seven touchdowns while being picked off an unacceptable 10 times.

Reggie Wayne

48 of 50

Apparently Reggie Wayne is absolutely useless without Peyton Manning throwing him the ball.

In 2011, Wayne has played in all eight games for the Indianapolis Colts, but has caught 35 passes for 487 yards (which is decent) and just one touchdown.

Leigh Bodden

49 of 50

Leigh Bodden signed a four-year, $22 million deal with the New England Patriots after his stellar play in 2009, but missed all of the 2010 season and was a complete bust this season.

Bodden was so bad and ultimately ineffective that the Patriots released just a few days ago.

No team has yet to pick up Bodden.

The Chicago Bears' Entire Offensive Line

50 of 50

I actually feel bad for Jay Cutler, as he's been sacked a total of 21 times this season, which is the 10th most in the NFL—keep in mind that Chicago did have a bye this past weekend.

Cutler has actually played fairly well this season for the Bears, but he could be doing light years better if his offensive line could actually pass block.
