BCS Standings: The 10 Most Important Games for Teams Vying for at-Large Bids

Dan VastaOct 30, 2011

The BCS Rankings are coming out once again, and the process of the BCS selection will soon be talked about.

The power six conferences wrap up six of the spots, so which teams will get the other four at-large bids?

College football has fluid changes every waking minute of the day, and there will be plenty of more shockers towards the end of the season. However, I break down the 10 most important games for teams vying for an at-large bid in the BCS.

11/12: TCU at No. 4 Boise State

1 of 10

The Broncos' biggest game of the season will be against the Horned Frogs in a Mountain West battle that will decide Boise State's BCS dreams.

TCU should be ranked, and that would help Boise State climb perhaps in the top two.

11/12: Nebraska at Penn State

2 of 10

The Huskers are on the verge of playing in the Big Ten with a chance to play in Pasadena, but if they go 11-1 heading into the Big Ten Championship, there is a chance they would get an at-large bid in the BCS.

Penn State is currently in the same category, as they have a two game lead in their division, but they they need to knock off either Ohio State on the road or Nebraska at home.

11/12: No. 6 Oregon at No. 3 Stanford

3 of 10

Andrew Luck will have his chance to win the Heisman and perhaps play in the BCS National Championship with a victory here.

However, a loss to Oregon, and they will go from BCS National Championship to at best a BCS at-large bid. The Fiesta Bowl would be calling to whoever loses this game, and it is a safe bet since they have the top pick among at-large bids in the BCS process.

11/19 No. 9 Nebraska at No. 13 Michigan

4 of 10

All of a sudden, Michigan is a part of the BCS at-large bid selection, and one would think they would become a can't miss team if they are ranked in the top eight.

There is a decent chance that the ACC and Big East winners do not crack the top eight, so it would be imperative that they finish 11-1 going into the Big Ten Championship.

If the Wolverine can knock off the Huskers at home, they would be the favorites to reach that conference championship, and if they do lose, they would still be an obvious choice for an at-large bid.

If Nebraska wins at Michigan, they would be in the same situation. Michigan and Nebraska both have amazing fanbases, and you can bank on them selling their tickets regardless of what BCS Bowl they would get selected to (Fiesta, Sugar).

11/12 Penn State at Ohio State

5 of 10

The Buckeyes may not be on the watch list for possible BCS at-large selections, but they can certainly play the spoiler role well.

They knocked off the Badgers and put a damper into their Big Ten dreams, and they might do the same to Penn State. As crazy as it may still sound, the Nittany Lions are undefeated in the Big Ten and have a tremendous shot at playing in the Big Ten Championship.

If Penn State can go 11-1, they would be a legit choice as an at-large bid in the BCS. A loss here to Ohio State would certainly crush those hopes, though.

11/25 No. 9 Nebraska at Iowa

6 of 10

Nebraska could only have one loss heading into this Farmagedon matchup between the Hawkeyes and Huskers.

This game is the day after Thanksgiving, so I expect Iowa to come out guns a blazing and possibly ruin the Huskers' Big Ten and BCS hopes.

11/25 No. 9 Arkansas at No. 1 LSU

7 of 10

The Razorbacks are hanging around in the BCS Rankings, and if they remain with a lone loss, this game would be a huge game.

LSU could be undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country, obviously; however, they could also have a loss against an Arkansas team that will be fighting for a BCS Bowl.

This game could have a few implications whether LSU is undefeated or has one loss.

Also, Arkansas continues to live on the hot seat at the end of ball games, which makes you think they could hang toe-to-toe with the Bayou Bengals.

11/26 No. 16 Penn State at No. 19 Wisconsin

8 of 10

The Badgers all of a sudden have two losses and are on the brink of elimination in the Big Ten. If Penn State has a loss heading into this game, then the winner be on their way to the very first Big Ten Championship.

The Badgers more than likely could not go in as an at-large bid in the BCS, but Penn State certainly can. Their only loss is to Alabama, which makes them a legit BCS at-large contender.

12/3 No. 7 Oklahoma at No. 3 Oklahoma State

9 of 10

The Boomer Sooners are back to kicking the teeth of their opponents in, and nobody on their schedule can slow their passing attack down.

Win or lose, the Sooners could be playing in a BCS Bowl, and the same is said for the Cowboys. However, Oklahoma should have bigger aspirations with this game if they remain undefeated.

Oklahoma could knock off the Cowboys, which would give them the Big 12 Championship and the Fiesta Bowl. The Cowboys would then become the obvious choice as an at-large bid in the Sugar Bowl.

Not only could this be the best game we saw all regular season, but both teams in this contest should be BCS bowling.

11/5 No. 1 LSU at No. 2 Alabama

10 of 10

The Game of the Century will have a winner proclaimed as the BCS National champs next weekend, but the loser will still be a lock for the BCS Sugar Bowl barring they collapse immediately following the game.

LSU would host Arkansas on Thanksgiving weekend, whereas Alabama would have Auburn on the road. The loser of their game next weekend would make one of those a vital game in regards to their BCS aspirations.

Still, The Game of the Century should be spectacular to watch, with the loser staying in the top five with a BCS Sugar Bowl on the horizon.
