Harold FriendOct 28, 2011

The 2011 Texas Rangers have joined the 1960 New York Yankees and the 1986 Boston Red Sox.

The sixth game of the World Series between the Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals uncannily mirrored the seventh game of the 1960 World Series between the Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Rangers were leading the Cardinals 7—4 going to the Cardinals half of the eighth inning.

The 1986 New York Mets 10th inning comeback against the Red Sox was considered by many the greatest in World Series history. That no longer is true.

Trailing 5-3 with two outs in the 10th inning, Gary Carter hit a Calvin Schiraldi 2-1 pitch into left field for a single. After fouling off a pitch, pinch-hitter Kevin Mitchell hit a line drive to center field for a single, moving Carter to second.

Schiraldi's first pitch to Ray Knight was a strike. Knight fouled off the next pitch.

The Red Sox were one strike away from winning the World Series.

Knight singled to right center field. Carter scored and Mitchell raced to third base with the potential tying run.

Bob Stanley came in for Schiraldi to face Mookie Wilson who fouled off the first pitch, took ball one and then ball two.

When Mookie fouled off the fourth pitch, the Red Sox once again were within one strike of winning the World Series.

Knight scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Everyone knows what happened next.

The Rangers led the Cardinals by two runs going to the bottom of the ninth inning. The inning ended with the game tied.

The Rangers led the Cardinals by two runs going to the bottom of the 10th inning. The inning ended with the game tied.

Each time, at the start of the inning, Tony La Russa told the Cardinals players to salute the fans before going to the clubhouse to drown their sorrow.

The tying hit in both the ninth and 10th innings came with two outs and 1-2 counts on the batter.

The Cards are the only World Series team to score in the eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th innings. They are the only team to trail by two runs in the ninth and 10th innings and tie the game.

Rangers fans and players now know what the 1960 Yankees and their fans and the 1986 Red Sox and their fans experienced.
