BCS Rankings: 10 Bold Predictions for This Week's BCS Standings

Rob GoldbergOct 23, 2011

The BCS rankings were released last week, and many college football experts thought the rankings would remain intact after what seemed to be a relatively calm weekend.

Those experts were very wrong.

No. 6 Wisconsin lost on a last-second touchdown pass by Kirk Cousins of Michigan State to ruin its undefeated season.

Oklahoma was upset at home by Texas Tech, possibly ruining what many thought would be a championship season.

Tonight, a new set of BCS rankings will be released and they will look much different than a week ago.

Stanford Will Have the Most Important Jump in Standings

1 of 10

Stanford was No. 8 in the polls last week, but a blowout victory over a ranked team might have been enough to finally impress some of the voters.

With losses by Wisconsin and Oklahoma, along with an unimpressive game by Boise State, the Cardinal might be able to jump all the way to four.

If the team remains there, it would only take one mistake to jump into the title game.

Oklahoma State Will Split Up Alabama and LSU

2 of 10

Oklahoma State surprised people last week when it was named the top-ranked team according to the computer polls.

This week when the Cowboys move up in the human polls, it might be enough to put them over Alabama in the latest BCS rankings.

It will not matter, since Alabama and LSU face each other in the next game. The only downside is the networks will not be able to hype the No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup.

Boise State Will Not Gain Any Ground

3 of 10

Many are hoping to finally see Boise State in the National Championship Game. Unfortunately, this once again does not seem likely.

As the season progresses, the Broncos continue to face an easier schedule that will not do them any favors in the computer polls.

In addition, the team did not look impressive in a win over a weaker Air Force team.

Boise State will need to play better in remaining games to impress the voters.

Oklahoma Will Remain in Front of Undefeated Kansas State

4 of 10

Kansas State has done nothing but win this season, even if the competition has not been great.

The schedule gets much tougher from here on, as next week the Wildcats host Oklahoma, who just lost this week.

Still, voters think enough of Oklahoma for them to remain higher in the rankings. Kansas State will be an underdog in its own stadium next week, against a team with more losses.

Houston Will Slowly Move Up the Rankings

5 of 10

Houston did not just defeat Marshall this week to improve to 7-0 on Saturday, but the offense once again showed how good it can be.

Quarterback Case Keenum led his team to 63 points in the victory, raising the per game average to 49.3 points. This makes the Cougars the top offense in the nation.

Voters are still skeptical of this team, but until it loses Houston should continue to climb up the polls.

Michigan State Will Make the Biggest Jump

6 of 10

Michigan State shot up the rankings a week ago when the Spartans defeated then-undefeated Michigan.

A week later the team was able to overcome a furious comeback by Wisconsin to knock off the only remaining undefeated team in the Big Ten.

The Spartans should be able to move from last weeks No.16 ranking, to at least around the Top 10.

West Virginia Will Have the Biggest Fall

7 of 10

While a few good teams lost this weekend, West Virginia might have lost in the most embarrassing fashion.

The Mountaineers got blown out 49-23 by unranked Syracuse, and it never seemed as if the team was in the game.

Analysts were giving West Virginia the benefit of the doubt because their only loss was to No. 1 LSU. Now it seems the team has just not faced enough competition.

Texas Tech Will Sneak into the Rankings

8 of 10

Texas Tech was very impressive in a win over Oklahoma. The Red Raiders controlled most of the game and it did not get close until the end.

The team has been a little bit of an afterthought in the Big 12 so far, but this win will get them back on the map in the rankings.

ACC Gets Two Teams in the Top 10

9 of 10

Clemson came back from a scary game against Maryland and solidified itself as a very good team. Scoring over 50 points in each of the last two games should be enough to silence some of the critics.

Virginia Tech might also get into the top 10 after another solid win against Boston College. The Hokies do not have too many quality wins, but the only loss was to Clemson.

It could create quite an ACC Championship Game rematch.

USC Should Make Top 25 but Will Not

10 of 10

If anyone was able to turn off one of the great games between ranked teams last night and put on the battle between USC and Notre Dame, they would have seen one pretty good football team.

The Trojans might not be bowl eligible this season due to NCAA sanctions, but the 6-1 team can beat almost anyone in the country.

USC is still loaded with talent and have a very balanced offense. Stanford should be scared next week when the team travels to the LA Coliseum.
