BCS Rankings: Wisconsin Botches National Title Chances Against Michigan State
The Wisconsin Badgers completely ruined any chance they had at making the BCS National Championship game when they lost to Michigan State last night.
The Spartans completely outplayed them most of the game and won a game that Wisconsin absolutely needed to come away with a victory in to make the title game.
BCS computer rankings were giving absolutely no respect to Wisconsin and their weak strength of schedule and now human voters are going to drastically lower them on their lists as well.
Prior to the Michigan State loss, Wisconsin was ranked No. 4 by both human polls but had an average of No. 11 in the computer rankings.
Wisconsin plays unranked Ohio State on the road next Saturday and has a very easy schedule the rest of the way, with their toughest matches against Illinois on the road and Penn State at Camp Randall.
Victories over these Big Ten opponents aren’t going to drastically change the computer and human voters opinion of the Badgers however.
Wisconsin needs to hope that Penn State wins out up until their Nov. 26 game and earns a higher rating. They also need to win that game BIG and then win the inaugural Big Ten Championship game.
Even if all of those scenarios come true, they would still need some help which would include the winner of Alabama vs. LSU losing a game after that and Oklahoma (who also lost last night) upsetting Oklahoma State on December 3.
Realistically, Wisconsin has an almost impossible battle and needs a lot of luck to make the national title game.
I can’t see it happening this season and they have no one to blame but themselves. They easily could have made a serious run at it had they just beaten the Spartans last night.
We will see exactly how things look when the official BCS rankings come out later today, but I expect Wisconsin to have fallen down quite a bit.
