BCS Rankings: Biggest Winners from Wisconsin's Shocking Loss to Michigan State

Josh MartinOct 23, 2011

That shaking you felt on Saturday night? That was the college football landscape undergoing a seismic shift after No. 16 Michigan State shocked No. 6 Wisconsin on a last-second Hail Mary touchdown.

With one flick of the wrist and a serendipitous snag on the other end, Spartans quarterback Kirk Cousins and quarterback-turned-receiver Keith Nichol managed to reshape the Big Ten title race as well as the chase for the BCS National Championship in a matter of seconds.

While the Badgers check in as the lone loser on the wrong end of the 37-31 decision, there were plenty of teams around the country who benefited from Saturday's thrilling finish in East Lansing.

Michigan State

The Spartans clearly made out as the biggest winners in this one. The win is the second over a ranked opponent in as many weeks for Mark Dantonio's team, which dispatched in-state rival Michigan for the Paul Bunyan Trophy last weekend.

Sparty now finds itself in control of the Legends Division of the Big Ten heading into a crucial clash with No. 13 Nebraska in Lincoln next weekend. A third consecutive win over a Top 25 foe next week would cement Michigan State as the favorite to win the Big Ten Championship and secure its first-ever BCS bowl berth.

Penn State

On the other side of the conference, No. 21 Penn State now finds itself sitting pretty ahead of Wisconsin in the Leaders Division. The Nittany Lions nipped Northwestern in Evanston, 34-24, to move to 6-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play.

Joe Paterno's squad still has a tough road aho, with home games against Illinois and Nebraska followed by dates at Ohio State and Wisconsin, but could very well sneak into the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game in Indianapolis nonetheless.

Stanford

On a national level, Wisconsin's loss is a huge gain for No. 7 Stanford. The Cardinal figured to sneak up a spot after demolishing No. 22 Washington at home, 65-21, and watching No. 5 Boise State struggle to put away Air Force.

With the Badgers dropping from the ranks of the unbeaten, Andrew Luck and company can comfortably assume that they'll have a spot in the top six with their name on it, bringing them ever closer to an elusive berth in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans.
