College Football Coaching Hot Seat: Odds on Which Coach Is Next To Go
With more than half of the 2011 college football season in the books, the remainder of the season is beginning to look bleak for the players on the rosters as well as the coaches of those programs.
As these coaches have been riding the hot seat for the better part of the 2011 season, the likelihood of these upcoming five coaches still wearing the headset next season is going to be very doubtful when the 2012 season begins next fall.

Robb Akey, Idaho
1 of 5Current Record: 18-39
Even with signing a new contract with the Vandals in June of 2010, Idaho coach Robb Akey has barely had an impact in his time with the Vandals as the teams has only had one winning season in the four plus years since Akey joined the program in 2007.
But with the lack of recruiting ability in Idaho and being in the shadow of cross-state rival Boise State, Coach Akey and the Vandals are continuing to fight an uphill battle in major college football, as Idaho is nothing more than just another win for a team that schedules the program.
While having a poor overall record, I see the program keeping Akey on as head coach to bring stability to the program as he hopes to turn around the Vandals in the coming seasons.
Odds: Unlikely To Be Fired
Rick Neuheisel, UCLA
2 of 5Current Record: 18-25
Since returning to college football after a stint in the NFL, Rick Neuheisel hasn’t found the same success at UCLA that he did in his first tour with Colorado and Washington, winning 66 games from 1995 through the 2002 season.
With the downright embarrassing loss to Arizona on Thursday night, the time has come for Neuheisel to make his way out of Los Angeles as he has done no better than eighth in the conference and seven wins in 2009.
Even with a great hotbed for talent in the state of California, Neuheisel has done nothing but bring the program down in his four seasons, except for one blip on the radar as the Bruins defeated Temple in the 2009 EagleBank Bowl in Washington, DC.
Odds: A Lock To Be Fired
Neil Callaway, UAB
3 of 5Current Record: 15-37
After being an offensive coordinator and/or offensive line coach since the 1981 season, Neil Callaway joined UAB as their head coach in the 2007 season but has only done as good as five wins in the 2009 season.
Even with a ton of talent around them in the state of Alabama, Georgia and Florida for recruiting, the Blazers and Callaway have been left behind other teams around them in the SEC, Conference USA and even the Sun Belt as the talent never reaches Birmingham.
Odds: Probable To Be fired
Larry Porter, Memphis
4 of 5Current Record: 2-17
When you look across the country, there can’t be another team in the football bowl subdivision that’s as bad as the Memphis Tigers of Conference USA.
After Rip Scherer and Tommy West couldn’t find success with the Tigers in their stints, Larry Porter acquired the program last season and only scored one win that season and has the same number so far this season.
When you’ve hit rock bottom as a football program, as Memphis has done in the last few season, the Tigers will likely keep the alumni Porter on as coach, but a change will likely be needed in the coming seasons if a winning season is in the future.
Odds: Should Be fired, Will Not
Rob Ianello, Akron
5 of 5Current Record: 2-16
To find a word to describe how it’s been for Rob Ianello in his time since taking over the Akron Zips in 2010, you will need to create a new word.
Coach Ianello got only won one win in his first season at Akron and with the remaining schedule left for 2011, the likelihood of another 1-11 season could be lined up for the longtime assistant coach and the Zips.
Odds: Should Be fired, Will Not
