Arkansas vs. Ole Miss: 5 Things We Learned from the Razorbacks' Win
Arkansas came close to allowing Houston Nutt his upset victory of the season, as the Razorbacks saw the Rebels jump out to a 17-point lead in the first half. Arkansas came from behind to grab the victory but should have never found themselves in that position to begin with.
The Razorbacks have shown their ability to strike fast offensively, and with only one major game left on the docket, the Hogs are likely to find their way to a 10-win regular season. Tyler Wilson and his host of receivers have the ability to take a game over at a moment’s notice.
Arkansas showed some issues with execution but finished the game the way they needed to. Here are five takeaways from today’s win against Ole Miss.
The Razorbacks Can Play from Behind
1 of 5Arkansas lost their grip on momentum early in this game. Ole Miss was able to score with three minutes left in the first quarter. They followed that score with two more quick touchdowns. Ole Miss was able to use Randall Mackey effectively as a scrambling quarterback and create mismatches against the Hogs.
Arkansas was able to maintain composure despite the quick scores. The Hogs' Dennis Johnson was able to break free before halftime and score from 52 yards away, giving the Hogs the spark they needed.
The Razorbacks came back in the third quarter with a fury, scoring three consecutive touchdowns. Keeping their composure through the half to come out explosively was a big step for the Hogs, as they look to stay in the conference elite well into the future.
Arkansas Allows Too Much Pressure
2 of 5Tyler Wilson is one of the best quarterbacks in the country. He has shown his ability to play from behind and under pressure. The Razorbacks only allow two sacks a game, but the pressure seems to be consistent.
The remaining schedule for Arkansas is not terribly daunting. But when they face LSU to finish the season, this will be a huge issue for the Hogs that will need to be addressed.
Allowing pass rushers to pound away at Wilson will not only hurt his productivity, but it will hurt his ability to stay healthy.
Arkansas Lacks Defensive Consistency
3 of 5If the Razorbacks want to contend for championships, they have to improve upon their defense's lack of consistency. The Razorbacks allowed a stagnant Ole Miss offense to perform quite well and play with them until the final interception to finish the game.
Randall Mackey looked like an All-Star at times against the Hogs. Ole Miss was able to be effective with their rushing attack as well. The Razorbacks have to improve their rushing defense and pass rush to be contenders in the future.
Arkansas Finds Playmakers
4 of 5Every week it seems that another Razorback rises to the challenge and takes the reigns for the Arkansas offense. This week it was Dennis Johnson and Joe Adams who did so.
Johnson rushed for 160 yards on 15 carries and added a touchdown on the ground. Adams pulled in four receptions for 124 yards. Both made plays when they were needed to give the Hogs an edge.
The Razorbacks have a host of players to choose from to make plays and find holes in opposing defenses. The wealth of receivers at Tyler Wilson’s discretion is a huge help, and the running backs are much more talented than expected after the loss of Kniles Davis in the preseason.
Arkansas will be a factor in every game they play due to the laundry list of athletes who take the field every week in the Hogs' uniform.
The Razorbacks Will Finish a Two Loss team
5 of 5With only two ranked teams remaining on the schedule for Arkansas, the Razorbacks appear to be in the driver’s seat to a 10-win season. The Hogs have South Carolina in two weeks and finish the season against LSU.
The remaining schedule is full of SEC opponents, but the Hogs won’t likely stumble against anyone until the Tigers of LSU come to town. Arkansas will have one of the best teams in the country but will still be the third best team in their division of the SEC.
Unfortunately for the Hogs, a BCS game is likely out of the question.
