BCS Rankings 2011: Nightmare Scenario Possible with 7 Potential Unbeaten Teams

Alex KayOct 19, 2011

Imagine this scenario:

At the end of the college football season there are seven teams that are undefeated.

Sounds crazy right? It’s not. It’s actually completely possible, and it may just happen this year.

Right now there are 10 unbeaten teams, but that number will whittle down to seven by the end of the year.

Let’s look at who these teams are first.

Right now we have LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Boise State, Wisconsin, Clemson, Stanford, Kansas State and Houston with perfect records.

LSU and Alabama play each other on Nov. 5, and that is pretty much going to determine one half of the national championship game, assuming the victor wins out.

Oklahoma State and Oklahoma meet on Dec. 3 in a game where both teams should be undefeated going in, and most likely determines the other team going to New Orleans for the national title.

Houston could easily win out, but they play in Conference USA and don’t have the pedigree that a small-conference team like Boise State has earned, which allows them to play in BCS bowl games.

Kansas State has to play both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State still, and will most likely be pushed aside and take two losses.

Stanford has to get through a brutal second half of the season with games against Washington, Oregon, USC and Notre Dame. They would make a legit argument for No. 1 if they win out.

Clemson has come out of nowhere this season and is proving they can beat anyone, anywhere. They still need to get past Georgia Tech and South Carolina, but the hardest part of their schedule is in the past.

Wisconsin is going to be murdered by their easy schedule and lack of road games. They already showed they are the Big Ten's best by beating Nebraska, and they most likely will see them again in the first title game in conference history. I don’t expect Wisconsin to lose a single game this season.

Boise State has to overcome a perceived weak schedule despite beating Georgia in the Georgia Dome to start their season. It would be a complete disappointment if they don’t win out, and they might get shafted once again from competing for the biggest prize in college football when they do.

Even if we have four undefeated teams at the end of the year, it is still going to be a nightmare scenario for the BCS. Each team is going to claim they deserve to be in the title game, and they each will have a legitimately good reason for doing so.

I hope this happens to be quite honest.

The BCS format is a complete nightmare, and it gives too much power to a very select and small group of gentleman who run their own computer rankings.

A playoff system is the only fair way to really determine who the best team in college football is.

I’m not going to get into the logistics of it, but there are men much wiser than I who have already come up with very realistic ideas to implement this.

I hope that seven teams go undefeated, and it forces the NCAA to re-evaluate this broken system that currently poisons college football.
