BCS Rankings 2011: Boise State and More That Have No Shot at Playing for Title

Richard LangfordOct 18, 2011

Boise State can steamroll its way through this season undefeated and it still won't have a chance to play for the national championship. They aren't the only ones either.

The top of the charts are just too loaded with strong teams from power conferences. The way I see it, either Oklahoma or Oklahoma State will go undefeated, and either LSU or Alabama will go undefeated.

That will leave Boise State, Wisconsin and Stanford on the outside looking in, even though I think all have an excellent shot of going undefeated.

Let's take a look at each.

No. 5 Boise State

The Broncos do not have one team on their schedule currently ranked in the Top 25.

They needed Georgia, who they already beat, and TCU, who they haven't played yet, to have strong seasons. Neither team is holding up their end of the bargain and Boise State's strength of schedule is suffering as a result.

No. 6 Wisconsin

Wisconsin is too good for its own good. This is a down year for the Big Ten and that leaves few ranked teams on its schedule.

When the Badgers do face a ranked team, like Nebraska, they embarrass them and send them plummeting down the rankings.

No. 8 Stanford

Stanford is in almost an identical position to Wisconsin. It will get a big late-season boost if It can easily handle No. 10 Oregon, but that is not going to be enough.

It will have the Pac-12 championship game to add another strong opponent on its schedule, but it is already in the stronger division of its conference, and whomever the team plays will not be ranked highly.
