Monday Night Football: 5 Halftime Adjustments New York Jets Must Make

Alex HallOct 17, 2011

It hasn't been a pretty half for either the New York Jets or Miami Dolphins. Other than a Darrelle Revis interception for a touchdown, Gang Green has been anything but impressive.

Mark Sanchez has looked brutal to start this game against their AFC East rival, with Matt Moore posting almost 100 yards more than the former first-round draft pick.

If the Jets wish to end their recent losing streak, they'll need to make some important adjustments while in the locker room during halftime.

Mark Sanchez Must Get Hot

1 of 5

Mark Sanchez has looked almost as brutal as he did in their last nationally televised performance against the Baltimore Ravens.

The former USC Trojan has struggled to complete passes to any of his receivers, especially on third downs. With eight minutes left in the half, the Jets were still without their first third down conversion in the game.

Sanchez must get Santonio Holmes involved in the passing game and attempt to create an offensive spark because the 'Fins' defense has all but taken away the rushing attack from their offensive playbook.

Running Game Must Become a Factor

2 of 5

The New England Patriots did it to this Jets team a week ago, and so far so have the Dolphins. The once-proud running game of the Jets has been all but shut down for the past six quarters of NFL play, with Ladainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene both held in check.

This puts more pressure on Mark Sanchez, which has often proven to be ineffective for Rex Ryan's team. So far this season, this team has rushed just 39 percent of the time, which will again most likely go down unless things change for this offense.

One of the backs need to become a factor in some fashion. They don't need to take over the game, just take some pressure off the wide receivers and draw attention away from the passing game.

Must Get the Ball to Santonio Holmes

3 of 5

Often times for this Jets offense during his time in New York, Santonio Holmes has bailed out the offense. It appears he may have to do so again tonight with the offensive attack looking bleak.

Holmes has less than 50 yards receiving heading into the third quarter, which simply cannot continue to be so if New York wants to hand their Floridian rivals a nationally televised loss tonight.

Perhaps if the offense moved Holmes around more pre-snap, it could confuse the defensive assignments for Miami and allow No.10 to do what he does best for this team, and that's provide an offensive spark.

Hold onto the Football

4 of 5

Similar to their hated New England rivals yesterday against the Dallas Cowboys, New York has been sloppy with the football on special teams and offensively.

Turnovers, more than anything, can cost you a game. If you want proof, go check out the Cowboys' game tape against these Jets from Week 1.

It goes without saying, but holding onto the football is a must if Gang Green wants to get into a rhythm and find a way to knock the Dolphins out of this contest.

Continue Playing Stellar Defense

5 of 5

The Jets have been able to regain one of their core identities in this game, and that's playing shutdown defense.

The offensive unit looked to finally find some momentum at the end of the the second quarter, and if this defense can continue to be stingy and shut down Brandon Marshall, there's a fair chance we see these Jets take over the second half and shut the door on Miami.
