BCS Rankings: 5 Top-Ranked Teams That Are Bound To Be Exposed Soon

Joel BarkerOct 17, 2011

There were more than a few surprises among the 2011 season's first set of BCS rankings. Some of those surprise teams are going to see their way out of those rankings very soon.

That's not say that those teams were overrated or underrated; it's just that more than a handful of the Top 20 teams have issues that will keep them from experiencing the success that seems to be within their grasp right now.

Here are five of the teams most likely to be exposed.

Kansas State Wildcats

1 of 5

Kansas State has been a fun team to watch to this point. Dan Snyder just knows how to get his kids to play above their ability.

It's just too bad their ability will fall well short in consecutive games against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas throughout the month of November.

That No. 11 BCS ranking is not going to last.

Michigan Wolverines

2 of 5

Okay, so this has already begun to happen with last weekend's loss to Michigan State, but I fear that was only the beginning to Michigan's problems.

The Wolverines, ranked No. 18 in the first BCS rankings, still have to play at Iowa and Illinois before returning home to play Nebraska and Ohio State.

I can count at least three losses for a team that has given up at least 24 points in three games against quality opponents.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

3 of 5

Nebraska hasn't exactly left many fans or observers feeling confident even in victory this season. Sure, the 'Huskers are 5-1, but a few of those five wins were in question far longer than they should have been. Not to mention the utter dismemberment at the hands of Wisconsin, a team who was ranked only one spot ahead of the 'Huskers at game time.

Nebraska has three games versus ranked opponents (Michigan State, Penn State and Michigan) remaining on the schedule. It wouldn't shock anyone if they lost all three of those games.

South Carolina Gamecocks

4 of 5

In less than one week, South Carolina lost a senior quarterback and a star running back. The quarterback was kicked off the team for ongoing difficulties with the bottle, while the running back suffered a terrible knee injury against Mississippi State.

No matter how you slice it, South Carolina is in real trouble. Marcus Lattimore was the vast majority of this offense. The same Connor Shaw that won the starting quarterback job out of fall practice and lost it by the second quarter of the first game will be counted on heavily from here on out.

Not exactly a recipe for success in the SEC.

Clemson Tigers

5 of 5

Seriously, this is still Clemson. Yeah, they are performing well right now, but there are still more than a few opportunities for the Tigers to choke it all away before the ACC Championship game.

We all thought that was going to happen at Maryland as late as the third quarter last weekend, but it did not happen. The first 39 minutes of that game, however, was a sign—a sign that this is still Clemson and a reminder that there's no way the Tigers make it to the end undefeated.
