BCS Rankings 2011: Texas, Oklahoma State and Overrated Teams in Initial Rankings
There are definitely quite a few overrated teams in the initial BCS rankings.
Most of this has to do with the six different computer rankings that make up the BCS and are putting teams higher than they should be based on the human polls.
While the BCS does try to put more emphasis on the two human rankings, it is just crazy to me that Anderson and Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin and Peter Wolfe have so much control over where teams wind up, and often times their rankings do not make sense compared to what we see on Saturdays.
I’m a huge proponent of a playoff system for college football and really think the current BCS system is a sham, so if you are one of the few that disagrees with me you may have a problem with these teams being considered overrated.
No. 4 Oklahoma State
Look, OK State is good. There is no denying that. However, to have the Cowboys fourth in the nation because they squeaked by an overrated Texas A&M team and beat an even more overrated Texas program isn’t right.
The team will have to prove itself against Kansas State on Nov. 5 and Oklahoma to end the season on Dec. 3.
If the Cowboys do run the table, I will completely change my opinion on these guys, but for right now I am not confident they are worthy of their ranking.
No. 24 Texas
Why are the Longhorns ranked? Oh that’s right, because of the computer polls.
Both human polls don’t have them on the list but some computer polls have them as high as 13 and only as low as 19. Just Richard Billingsley left this scrub team completely off.
Sure, they have only lost to the No. 3 and 6 team in the nation so far, but they haven’t even looked that good.
The team uses two quarterbacks for crying out loud. How often does that work?
No. 21 Penn State
The Nittany are barely hanging in the rankings for human polls but gaining ground with the computer.
They have a ton of unconvincing wins and a huge loss to Alabama. Luckily we will see the last of them being ranked after they have to face Illinois, Nebraska and Wisconsin during a four-week stretch.
