BCS Rankings 2011: The BCS Top 25 Teams We Still Have No Faith in
The first set of BCS rankings are out, and even though teams have played six or seven games, some teams have yet to prove themselves worthy of a high ranking.
Others may have some wins against top opponents, but they have not convinced anyone they can do it again.
Here are some of the teams that have yet to earn the trust of college football fans.
Honorable Mention
1 of 6Nebraska: The Huskers' best win is against now No. 25 Washington 51-38, and they got absolutely demolished in their other Top 25 battle. The defense was already having a rough season, but without Jared Crick, Nebraska could be in free fall.
Auburn: Auburn has played five teams that have been or are ranked in the Top 25. They lost two of three to teams currently ranked and won the other one by three.
Boise State: Like every other year, the Broncos play a weak schedule, and their marquee game against Georgia has not looked that great considering how the Bulldogs have done this season against some of the worst teams in the SEC.
Michigan State: If you had the misfortune of watching Michigan State take on Michigan, I feel sorry for you. It was an ugly, ugly football game, and the Spartans have no other quality wins.
West Virginia: The Mountaineers put up great yardage against LSU, but they have not played or beaten anyone else of note.
Penn State
2 of 6Beating Purdue by five points is nothing to be proud of, but that is what it took for Penn State to get ranked this week. They also narrowly escaped Temple by four points, Indiana by six and Iowa by 10.
They played their absolute hearts out against Alabama, but until we see that kind of effort every game or the offense score more than 21 points per game, this team can’t be trusted to win almost any game.
Houston
3 of 6The Cougars may be undefeated, but the combined record of their opponents is 11-24. Holy wow, that’s bad.
Case Keenum is once again putting up video-game-like numbers, but their defense is not consistent and they’ve won three of their games by seven or less points. Against the schedule they’ve played, that’s pathetic.
Stanford
4 of 6Andrew Luck is one great quarterback, but the rest of this team is incredibly unproven and inexperienced. Stanford may be ranked eighth, but their best win is against 3-3 Washington State, and the combined record of their opponents is 14-23.
One of their best defensive players, linebacker Shayne Skov, is out for the season, and their pass defense has not been very good, allowing 235 yards per game, which ranks 81st in the country.
Kansas State
5 of 6One of the biggest surprises has been 6-0 Kansas State, but the Wildcats still leave a lot to be desired.
Five of their games have come down to a touchdown or less, and their offense is incredibly one-dimensional—about two-thirds of their offense comes from the run. Once this team plays a good defense i.e. Oklahoma, this team should get seriously exposed.
South Carolina
6 of 6This team was already looking sketchy with multiple narrow wins over lesser opponents, but without Marcus Lattimore, things could get even worse. The star running back injured his knee against Mississippi State and is done for the season.
Without Stephen Garcia, two of the highly touted trio of skill players will be off the field for the rest of their games, and three of their five wins came by three or less points. They also lost their only game to a team currently ranked in the Top 25.
