BCS Rankings 2011: Who Is Too High, Who Is Too Low in Initial Poll?
The first BCS rankings have finally arrived and as expected, LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma are in the Top Three.
There are some surprises, as expected. Some teams are possibly too high while others may be a little too low.
It is still early and the season is only halfway over, so there is a lot of football left to be played.
Here are five teams that are ranked too high and five that are ranked too low in the latest BCS rankings.
Overrated: Houston
1 of 10Houston is ranked No. 19 in the first ranking. While they are undefeated, they have yet to play anybody of note.
The Cougars have only played one decent team and that was a four-point victory over a sub-par UCLA squad.
They will more than likely continue to move up the rankings because there is a chance they will go undefeated.
Either way, it looks like No. 19 is a little too high for the Cougars.
Overrated: Virginia Tech
2 of 10The Hokies were manhandled against Clemson, the only ranked team they have played all season.
They have defeated Appalachian St, East Carolina, Arkansas St, Marshall, Miami and Wake Forest.
They are currently ranked No. 12, ahead of one-loss teams like Michigan St. and West Virginia.
Virginia Tech is ranked a little high for what they have shown so far this season.
Overrated: Nebraska
3 of 10The Nebraska defense has struggled all season, giving up over 27 points per game.
They are 5-1 with a win over Washington but were dominated by Wisconsin.
They are ranked No. 13 in the initial BCS poll, a ranking that seems a little too high considering their resume.
They will have a hard time keeping their ranking with their upcoming schedule.
Overrated: Penn State
4 of 10Penn St. is ranked No. 21 in the BCS Poll and that seems a little too high.
The Nittany Lions lost to Alabama and have barely squeaked by the likes of Temple, Indiana, Iowa and Purdue, beating those four teams by a combined 25 points.
Their defense is solid, but the offense leaves something to be desired.
Penn St. will likely drop off the list sooner or later.
Overrated: Auburn
5 of 10Auburn is ranked No. 20 and that may not seem too high, but with two losses, they are ahead of teams with one loss, such as Illinois and Georgia Tech.
These two teams dropped drastically after losses yesterday.
Auburn will have their hands full with the upcoming schedule and might find it difficult to remain in the rankings.
Underrated: Oregon
6 of 10Oregon was expected to be the highest-ranked one-loss team, but they were jumped by Arkansas and come in at No. 10.
Oregon's lone loss this season is to No. 1 LSU.
They defeated Arizona St. handily last night without LaMichael James and appear headed for a showdown later in the year with Stanford.
The Ducks have a good shot at moving far up the rankings as the season progresses.
Underrated: Georgia Tech
7 of 10The Yellow Jackets looked dominant all season until stumbling on the road 24-21 to Virginia yesterday.
That loss dropped them from a Top 12 team down to No. 22 in the rankings.
They are in the top 10 in the country in points per game and are one of the favorites to win the ACC.
Georgia Tech should feel a little bit snubbed at No. 22.
Overrated: Michigan St.
8 of 10Michigan St. should feel snubbed big time being ranked No. 18.
Their lone loss came on the road against Notre Dame.
The Spartans have won at Ohio State and also defeated Michigan Saturday.
The Spartans have to feel like they should be ranked higher. They will get the chance to prove themselves with their next two games against Wisconsin and Nebraska.
Underrated: Illinois
9 of 10Illinois barely cracked the rankings, coming in at No. 23.
The Fighting Illini are 6-1, with their lone loss coming to Ohio State on Saturday.
They find themselves well behind a one-loss Michigan team and three spots behind a two-loss Auburn team.
Illinois has defeated Arizona St. out of conference and seems to be more worthy of a ranking in the Top 20.
Underrated: Wisconsin
10 of 10The Wisconsin Badgers have looked more impressive than almost anybody in the country en route to an undefeated record.
They have the biggest margin of victory of anybody in the country and while their schedule has not been the most difficult, they did manhandle Nebraska.
Still, they find themselves at No. 6, behind Boise St.
That has to be disappointing for Wisconsin, who is certain to climb the rankings in the weeks to come.
