BCS Rankings 2011: 5 Title Games We Would Love to See
Now that we have our first glimpse of the BCS rankings for 2011, it's time to start looking down the road a bit to see where the potential bumps, potholes, and cliffs might be.
Everyone has a firmer grasp of where each team stands, and what each team's chances are for a BCS berth this season, but that doesn't mean all is written in stone.
In fact, previous seasons have taught us that there are usually a few thrills and shocks along the way before the final BCS picture is brought into focus.
So where are the sinkholes this season for the BCS? What games could really thrown a wrench into the entire system?
Here are five good candidates for games that could really screw up the 2011 BCS picture.
5. Alabama vs. Oklahoma
1 of 5Few coaches have been as dominant over the past decade than Nick Saban and Bob Stoops.
At Oklahoma, Bob Stoops has won eight conference titles in 12 years as a head coach. In his second year he won a national championship, and has made more than a few BCS appearances during his time.
Nick Saban has won two national championships, and more impressively was able to do it at two different schools. It took him four years to win a title at LSU, and then only three to win at Alabama.
This would be a true battle of wits between brilliant coaches, representing two of the most historic football programs in the nation.
4. Oklahoma State vs. Wisconsin
2 of 5These two undefeated teams are the top two scoring teams in the NCAA this season.
Oklahoma State has been under the radar so far, but the computer rankings brought to light how good the Cowboys are. The offense is led by star receiver Justin Blackmon, and quarterback Brandon Weeden is completing over 70% of his passes.
At 49.2 points per game, they trail only Wisconsin for the national lead.
Badgers quarterback Russell Wilson is making his case for the Heisman Trophy, as the transfer from NC State has a quarterback rating of 210.9.
Wilson has a 14:1 touchdown to interception ratio and even had a receiving touchdown this week as his team rolled over another opponent.
If these two teams get together, fans might need a calculator to keep score.
3. Stanford vs. Alabama
3 of 5Before the season started, Andrew Luck was given the title of the best quarterback in the NCAA. Nothing he has done this season has raised any doubt.
Already pronounced as the first overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft, Luck has been under the microscope all season and has passed every test the critics give him.
Still, the biggest possible test would come in the BCS National Championship Game if Stanford faces Alabama.
The Crimson Tide have arguably the best defense in football. The unit has only given up an average of seven points per game this season, the lowest total in the country. Almost every defensive starter will be playing in the NFL.
If Andrew Luck wants to show he can thrive at the next level, he would first have to do it against this defense.
2. LSU vs. Wisconsin
4 of 5This would be a contest between the two most dominant teams in the 2011 college football season.
LSU has jumped both Oklahoma and Alabama in the AP poll, despite neither neither team losing a game. In order to do that they had to beat some solid teams, and beat them well.
The Tigers have done that this season by beating four ranked teams, and scoring over 40 points in three of them.
Wisconsin has not had the same type of schedule, but the team has been dominating its opponents. The Badgers are leading the country with 50.2 points per game, and the defense has only given up the third-least amount of points per game. This adds up to a average victory of 40.5 points.
These two teams would have quite a battle.
1. Boise State vs. Anyone
5 of 5Please give this team a chance.
Boise State debuted at No. 5 in the BCS Rankings, so as usual the school will need some help from other teams.
Even if there are other undefeated teams, Boise State still deserves a chance at a title. Since 2008, the Broncos are an outstanding 44-2. That has earned them one BCS Bowl, a win over fellow non-AQ team TCU.
We are all aware that the team does not face the same type of schedule as an SEC team. Every week is a tough contest for LSU and Alabama, and each has to play its best to survive. However, when a team has the type of sustained success that the Broncos have, that team deserves to play for a championship.
Anyone who watched the 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma knows how much fun Chris Peterson's team is to watch in a big game. Maybe one day we can see that on an even bigger stage.
