Jason Campbell Injury: Will the Raiders Try to Acquire Palmer, Orton or Garrard?

Gary DavenportOct 16, 2011

The Oakland Raiders defeated the Cleveland Browns 24-17 today to move to 4-2 on the season, but the victory was a bittersweet one for the Raiders, who lost starting quarterback Jason Campbell to a broken collarbone that has apparently ended the seventh-year pro's season.

Backup Kyle Boller was fairly effective in relief of Campbell, completing 8 of 14 passes for 100 yards, but the Raiders are now faced with a decision that could have a major impact on their 2011 season.

At 4-2 and in contention, are the Raiders content to turn the offense over to Boller, or should the Silver and Black take steps to acquire a quarterback such as Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals, Kyle Orton of the Denver Broncos, or free agent David Garrard?

Boller has some experience as a starting quarterback in the NFL, starting 46 games over his eight year career, and while Boller certainly has a big arm he's also shown to be inaccurate and inconsistent, and in all honesty if the Raiders are serious about making a run at the playoffs they're going to need to upgrade under center.

It may be hard to acquire a quarterback that's already on another roster, as the Raiders are woefully thin so far as draft picks go, having traded their second, fourth and seventh round picks in 2012 away in various deals and having used their 2012 third rounder to select quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the supplemental draft.

That will likely put Carson Palmer out of their price range (assuming that the Bengals have any interest in moving him), and it's somewhat unlikely that the Broncos would deal a starting quarterback to a division rival unless the deal was simply too good to pass up, so Orton's out.

Enter David Garrard.

There have been varying reports as to whether Garrard has any desire to play, but assuming he does signing with Oakland could be a good fit for both sides. Garrard is a solid, if unspectacular starter who could manage the Raiders run-first offense fairly effectively, and Garrard would have a chance to start for a team with playoff aspirations by heading west.

It makes too much sense for it to happen probably, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if David Garrard's phone rings tomorrow and the caller ID shows an Oakland area code.
