Georgia Football: 5 Things We Learned About the Bulldogs Against Vandy

Brian JonesOct 15, 2011

Georgia earned its fifth consecutive victory by edging the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday, 33-28. It was a strange game because Georgia played well enough to win, but Vandy was one play away from pulling off the upset.

What does this game say about the Bulldogs? Are they not a team worthy of the SEC East? Were the past teams they played just that bad? Will the Bulldogs have an absolute dominating win over an SEC opponent this season?

Here are five things to take away from the Bulldogs win against the Commodores.

Aaron Murray Is Not in a Sophomore Sulmp

1 of 5

Despite throwing more picks than he did last season. Murray is not in a slump. He threw for three scores and looked good throwing the deep ball.

If it wasn't for the plays he made, the Bulldogs would have lost and the Mark Richt's hot seat talk would start all over again.

Isaiah Crowell Has Some Work to Do

2 of 5

This does not mean Crowell is struggling on the field, it means he has some work to do in order to earn Richt's full trust.

Crowell did not play the entire first quarter and there was no reason given for why he sat out.

He must have violated a team rule sometime during the week and if that's the case, he will learn that he has to be a leader on and off the field.

The Secondary Is Strong

3 of 5

I really like the way the secondary has been playing during this winning streak.

Yes, Vandy scored 28 points, but it they scored those points because they made plays on special teams or in the running game.

Bacarri Rambo made plays as well as Brandon Boykin and Shawn Williams. There is a lot of experience with the unit and it's showing each game.

The Special Teams Have Issues

4 of 5

From Blair Walsh missing two field goals, to Vandy blocking a Drew Butler punt, the special teams struggled throughout the entire game.

In fact, one could make the argument that the special teams almost cost the Bulldogs the game.

In order for the Bulldogs to win the SEC East, the special teams have to be better. No doubt about it.

The Team Has to Keep Its Emotions in Check

5 of 5

I'm not sure what happened at the end of the game, but the way Todd Grantham handled himself at the end of the game was not the way to go.

When a coach is fighting with another coach, that ignites the players on both sides, which occurred at the end of the Georgia-Vandy game.

But even before the game, Georgia had a few person foul penalties called on them for unnecessary roughness.

That has to stop moving forward or it will cost the Bulldogs a game or two.
