Clemson vs. Maryland: 5 Halftime Adjustments the Terrapins Must Make
What a great game so far as the No. 8 Clemson Tigers take on the Maryland Terrapins at Byrd Stadium. Maryland holds a 28-17 lead and is looking to get back on track in the ACC and complete the upset at home.
Here are five halftime adjustments the Terps must make if they want to shock the world with a huge upset.
1. Set the Pace on Offense
Maryland needs to continue to set the tempo in the second half.
On their first drive the Terps had decent success running quick snaps and letting Brown make throws over the middle. If they want to complete the upset Maryland needs to continue to control the pace in order to give their young QB confidence and rhythm.
2. Contain Watkins
The Terps need to make sure they keep the Tigers' WR Watkins contained in the second half. Watkins boasts extreme breakaway speed and has been one of the best receivers in the ACC this year. Maryland must make sure they have safety help over the top so they don't get burned deep.
3. Get Brown Outside of the Pocket
The Terps need to get C.J. Brown outside of the pocket in the second half. Either by running options or having him roll out, Maryland should try to get Brown on the move. Brown's speed gives the Terps a threatening run-pass option that will keep the Tigers' D on their heels.
4. Stop Ellington Downhill
The Tigers have continued to run Ellington right down the heart of Maryland's defense. The Terps' young LBs need to step up in the second half and make sure they make the first tackle.
5. Capitalize on Clemson's Mistakes
This seems obvious but if the Terps want any chance of beating the No. 8 team in the nation, they NEED to capitalize on Clemson errors. In the first quarter Maryland did a great job of turning Watkins' fumble and Boyd's interception into touchdowns. If they want to complete this upset they have to continue to make the most of every opportunity the Tigers give them.
