Denard Robinson Injury: Buy or Sell Robinson Sitting out the Final Series

T.J. McaloonOct 15, 2011

If you happened to miss the Michigan-Michigan State game today, you missed two teams with horrible uniforms, playing in a game for bragging rights in the state of Michigan.

Oh, and someone on Michigan got injured late in the game.

Yes, the man they call "Shoelace"—the man who had huge games leading into this one against Michigan State, thus causing a lot of people (this writer included) place him at the top of their Heisman Trophy candidates—was hurt today.

Late in the fourth quarter, Robinson was thrown to the ground late by Michigan State defender, Marcus Rush, drawing a "roughing the passer" penalty.

Robinson left the game with an "upper body injury" and did not return.

Now, the question is, with Robinson injured, do you "buy or sell" that he couldn't return to the game?

Buy: The Injury Was to His Head

A head injury is hard to tell the severity to the injury. If you see someone's ankle get turned backwards, you can tell that he's really hurt and will not be returning to the game.

However, we cannot see into someones' brain thus cannot tell how injured someone really is.

So far there are no reports saying that he did not suffer a concussion. However, it may come out later this week after doctors have a chance to examine the beaten up quarterback.

Sell: Denard Was Just a Little Beaten Up

After the game, while being interviewed by reporters, Denard said of today's game, "I got a little beat up."

If he was a "little beat up" then why couldn't he of came back onto the field to lead his team on a comeback?

Was it his decision to stay on the sideline, or a call from the coaches, since the quarterback didn't have any answers for the Michigan State defense?

For the day Denard had his worst stats of the '11 Season. He went  9 of 24 passing only throwing for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

That one interception led to a Michigan State touchdown that put the game out of reach 28-14.

Throughout the day, Robinson was hit and hit hard. He carried the ball 18 times rushing only for 42 yards and was able to score just once.

Those 18 rushes meant that Robinson was hit on 18 different plays to go along with the number of times Robinson was hit on his passing downs.

Keeping him out may have been the smart move; saving the quarterback for later on in the season.

Sell: The "Upper Body" Injury May Not Have Been the Only Injury

Heading into this week's game, Robinson was dealing with an arm injury that kept him out for some time during last week's Northwestern game.

So which injury kept Denard out of this last series? Was it the head injury from today, or is it the arm injury from last week?

Or, is it a case that Denard was frustrated, having to deal with a Michigan State defense that didn't allow him to dominate the game, like the last six weeks.

Taking a look at today's highlghts, Michigan State's defense was just too much for Denard and this Michigan offense.

Denard has a history of injuries, as his style of play at quarterback leaves him venerable to take a lot of hits. His body frame isn't built to take this many hits and he maybe wearing down after seven games.

Michigan fans have seen this happen before to their explosive quarterback. They're off next week, which will give Robinson time to rest up before their next game against Purdue.

Going forward, Michigan should start to rest Robinson later on in blow out victories, so that scenes like today don't happen again.
