BCS Rankings 2011: Nebraska and 3 Teams Not Worthy of BCS Top 15 Ranking
The first BCS rankings of the 2011 college football season will be revealed Sunday night, and as always, the fans will have much to say no matter what the poll looks like.
The computers will no doubt snub a few teams, as well as give some teams more love than they deserve.
Fans are going to disagree with the poll Sunday night and likely the rest of the season, but that is to be expected. It's no different than the preseason polls, and it will never change as long as the BCS is still alive.
However, the debates over rankings are also part of what makes college football so great.
There are a few teams ranked in the Top 25 right now that will lose this weekend, which will greatly affect the first BCS rankings.
On the other hand, the teams that continue to be overrated will keep that trend alive once the BCS rankings come out on Sunday.
Here are three teams that are likely to get BCS love, but the reality is that they are not worthy of being in the Top 15 of the first BCS Poll of 2011.
Nebraska
The Cornhuskers are No. 14 in the country right now, but they haven't done enough to solidify themselves as a Top 15 BCS team.
The BCS loves winners, but the only game that matters for Nebraska thus far this season is the loss the Cornhuskers suffered against the Wisconsin Badgers.
Nebraska may be 5-1, but needing late comeback wins against Fresno State, Washington and Ohio State does not bode well for the Cornhuskers.
The loss to Wisconsin isn't terrible in the eyes of the BCS because the Badgers are a Top 5 team, but the fact that Nebraska was demolished in that game tells you how far they are from being a great team.
Bo Pelini and the Cornhuskers may very well be in the Top 15 on Sunday night, but they really shouldn't because top teams shouldn't struggle early in the game against lesser opponents.
South Carolina
The Gamecocks are No. 15 in the nation right now, but just because the AP is giving them love right now it doesn't mean they're a lock for the top 15 in the BCS.
At 5-1, the Gamecocks have yet to beat a ranked opponent this season, and at the time they lost to Auburn, the Tigers were unranked, which won't help him on Sunday.
South Carolina could very well lose this weekend against Mississippi State, and that would definitely knock them out of the Top 15.
However, even if they do win in Week 7, the Gamecocks still haven't shown they're worthy of being a Top 15 team.
Struggling against Navy and Georgia doesn't help the Gamecocks, and the only reason they might be in the BCS Top 15 on Sunday is because they're in the SEC.
West Virginia
The Mountaineers are No. 13 in the AP Poll right now, but the USA Today Coaches Poll has them at No. 16.
West Virginia hasn't been anyone of worth, and the Mountaineers haven't done anything this season to prove they're deserving of a Top 15 ranking.
Their one loss to the LSU Tigers won't hurt them in the polls at all because the Tigers are likely to be the No. 1 team in the country.
However, West Virginia's biggest wins so far this season are over Maryland and Connecticut, which isn't saying much since neither of those teams have a winning record right now.
In fact, the Mountaineers have only beaten two teams with winning records, but beating Bowling Green and Norfolk State is far from impressive.
