College Football: Non-BCS Quarterbacks Fans Should Know About

Gean MayOct 13, 2011

College football has plenty of talent at the quarterback position, and the players usually garnering most of the attention don the uniform of a BCS school.

Unless you pay close attention to Mel Kiper Jr.'s "Big Board," or wait until the NFL draft draws closer, a lot of very good players are overshadowed by guys in the big-time conferences.

Following is a list of quarterbacks that don't play under the bright lights of the BCS but play at a very high level and deserve a look.

You will recognize a few names that get BCS-type love, but not many.

Case Keenum: Houston

1 of 6

Most fans have heard of this guy, and if not, they will.

Case Keenum and the Cougars are undefeated and ranked No. 25 in the nation.

No. 7 has completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 2,309 yards and 17 touchdowns against two interceptions.

Right now he is second in fan voting for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award. Playing in Conference USA will probably stop him from getting any big-time Heisman attention.

Kellen Moore: Boise State

2 of 6

If Case Keenum is No. 2 in the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award fan voting, guess who's No. 1?

You guessed it—the left-handed senior from Boise State.

Kellen Moore has completed 74 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns and four interceptions through five games with a pass efficiency rating of 171.6.

Unlike Keenum, Moore plays for a Top Five team and will probably receive his fair share of Heisman Trophy attention as the season moves forward.

Chuckie Keeton: Utah State

3 of 6

This Utah State freshman burst onto the scene with an eye-popping performance at Auburn in the season opener against the reigning national champions.

Chuckie Keeton was 21-of-30 with 213 yards and also ran for two touchdowns.

Keeton has huge upside with a 6'2" frame and the ability to tuck it and run when he has to.

Although Keeton's stats are not head-turning quite yet, he certainly has the potential; he has thrown for 800 yards with nine touchdowns, with three coming by way of his feet. He doesn't turn the ball over either—the freshman has yet to throw an interception in 2011.

Keeton also has a nice running game led by Doak Walker candidate Robert Turbin, who will help him out in the passing game.

Bryant Moniz: Hawaii

4 of 6

Bryant Moniz was a walk-on at Hawaii in 2009.

In 2010 Moniz exploded, throwing for 5,040 yards and tossing 39 touchdowns.

Moniz is now a scholarship player, and although he is not having a repeat of 2010, he is still a huge threat. In 2011 he has thrown for 1,578 yards with 15 touchdowns and just one pick.

These stats could balloon, as the Warriors have started their conference schedule.

Casey Pachall: TCU

5 of 6

Casey Pachall has some big shoes to fill—he is taking over the vacancy left by Andy Dalton, who is currently a starter for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Pachall is a big boy at 6'5", 216 pounds and seems to be settling in nicely.

The 2011 TCU Horned Frogs are not the BCS busters they have been in the past few years, but this kid, with his 15 touchdowns against four interceptions, has the ability to get them back to that level.

If he continues this pace, he could end the season with over 30 touchdowns and over 2,600 yards passing—not a bad résumé to take into his junior year and try to recapture what the Horned Frogs have done the past few seasons.

Derek Carr: Fresno State

6 of 6

You didn't think I was going to leave this guy off the list, did you?

Derek Carr plays for my hometown Fresno State Bulldogs.

Carr is the younger brother of former No. 1 overall draft pick David Carr. In his first year as the starter for the Bulldogs, he is a redshirt sophomore and the future of Fresno State football.

This kid has a howitzer for an arm and can put a nice touch on the ball when needed.

The Bulldogs are a young team on offense and have a bright future that will help Carr as he grows.

No. 4 (after Brett Favre) has 1,417 yards passing and 10 touchdowns; with WAC play now under way, look for Carr's stats to climb.
