College Football Week 7: What's Hot, What's Not This Week

John BradfordOct 12, 2011

The past Saturday of college football marked some major statements and some major disappointments.

This week hasn't been short of its own drama. Both a high-profile player and coach have been let go.

So as Week 7 of the season progresses let's take a look at what's hot and what's not in college football.

Hot: LaMichael James

1 of 8

After being held to under 100 yards for the first two weeks of the season, the Oregon star running back responded. Three straight weeks of over 200 yards have LaMichael James’ name once again being mentioned among the Heisman contenders.

James ranks second in the country with 852 rushing yards on the season. Unfortunately, at a time when he may be the hottest player in the country, James is trying to recover from a dislocated elbow.

His status this Saturday is uncertain.

Not: Stephen Garcia

Stephen Garcia’s tumultuous career at South Carolina came to a fitting end when he was kicked off the team on Tuesday. Sadly, he will be remembered most for his untapped potential and suspensions.

Garcia had thrown nine interceptions this season before being benched for Connor Shaw in last week's victory over Kentucky. Garcia started 34 games in his career at South Carolina.

Hot: Nathan Scheelhaase

3 of 8

Unnoticed to many, Scheelhaase has put up some of the best numbers in the country from the quarterback position, while leading his team to a 6-0 record.

The sophomore quarterback has passed for over 1,200 yards and rushed for over 300, accounting for 14 total touchdowns in the process. His passer efficiency rating of 175.8 ranks fifth in the nation.

Not: Mike Stoops

4 of 8

In the midst of his seventh season in Tuscon, Stoops was let go after a 1-5 start. The Wildcats defense was the biggest problem, ranking 117th in the nation and giving up over 35 PPG.

Arizona had lost 10 of its last 11 games under Stoops.

Hot: Georgia Tech

5 of 8

Could the Ramblin Wreck be the new Auburn? No I don’t mean they’re going to win a national championship, but they just keep on winning.

Tech’s 21-16 victory over Maryland marked the Yellow Jackets' third straight win by 10 points or less.

They may not be the most flashy team, but that win moved them to 6-0 on the year, and 3-0 in ACC play.

Not: The State of Florida

6 of 8

Following Florida and Florida State dropping from the poll, this week marks the first time since 1982 that no team from the state of Florida is ranked in the AP Top 25.

The Gators have lost two consecutive games to Top Five opponents.

Florida State, however, has fallen apart since losing to Oklahoma. The Seminoles have gone from BCS Title contender to outside the Top 25 in no time it seems.

Hot: The Big 12

7 of 8

Don’t say die yet. The addition of TCU marked the first good piece of news for the Big 12 as a whole in a long time.

This alone may not be enough to keep the league together, but it was a solid first step in attempting to solidify the future of a conference that has been in limbo for over a year.

Not: Texas

8 of 8

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

A year after posting its first losing record in over 20 years, the Texas program showed it still has a long way to go in getting back to the top.

The Longhorns may be 4-1, but were humiliated after the 55-17 trashing handed down by their arch rival Sooners.

Texas somehow remained ranked in both major polls, but with Oklahoma St. on the schedule next, that ranking could be in jeopardy.
