College Football Recruiting: 2011 Class Recruits Who Already Look Like Stars

Edwin WeathersbyOct 11, 2011

Now, the 2011 class of college football recruits are still only true freshmen who are probably still trying to figure where their classes are on campus. So if your favorite recruit hasn't done much this year or is on track to be redshirted, don't sweat it.

However, there are a handful of players who have already made an impact and are either starting or playing significant roles for their teams and look like stars already.

Here they are.

8. Marcus Roberson, CB: Florida

1 of 8

Roberson got his way in Gainesville and has been starting at CB for the Gators this season.

That's saying something, as Florida has a wealth of talented athletes in their secondary depth chart. Roberson has 17 tackles and has broken-up five passes so far this season.

He should easily make the Freshman All-American team, and looks like the next star CB for Florida.

7. Braxton Miller, QB: Ohio State

2 of 8

He's the future of Ohio State Buckeyes football. Simple and plain.

Miller has gotten his feet wet this season. In five games, he completed 25 of 47 passes with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also ran 49 times for 209 yards.

Miller likely will see his starts increase as the season moves forward because he has flashed a ton of potential and playmaking ability.

6. Anthony Johnson, DT: LSU

3 of 8

Johnson is going to be a beast in the SEC. I'm just happy I don't play on an offensive line in that conference because he's going to be beating people up in years to come.

At 6'4" and over 300 pounds, he's flashed great snap-quickness, power, strength and athleticism. Johnson is part of a big time defensive line rotation for LSU.

He's got five stops, 2.5 tackles for losses and one sack in five games so far.

5. Malcolm Brown, RB: Texas

4 of 8

Brown has secured the starting job for the Longhorns and leads the team in rushing with 84 carries for 381 yards and a touchdown.

He does share some of the load with Fozzy Whitaker among other RBs for Texas, but Brown has flashed some skills that spell S-T-A-R. Look for Brown and 2012 commit Johnathan Gray to form a dangerous tandem in the coming years in Austin.

4. Isaiah Crowell, RB: Georgia

5 of 8

Crowell has flashed, shown, displayed, exhibited and exemplified every other possible verb that connotes him showcasing his wealth of speed, balance, solid run strength and agility.

He's already the starting RB for Georgia and is lead dog in their rushing offense. Crowell has ran 118 times for 473 yards and is pretty much right at the 5 yards per carry clip. He also has four touchdowns.

Crowell is a flat-out star for Georgia.

3. Marqise Lee, WR: USC

6 of 8

I will be the first to admit that I was sort-of wrong. I thought Lee was going to play safety for USC, but he has said Lane Kiffin told him while recruiting him that he wanted Lee to play WR.

And Lee has not disappointed. What's shocking is that George Farmer was supposed to be featured in this slide, but it's Lee who came into camp and made headwaves.

Farmer will get his chance this week vs. Cal.

Lee already has 21 receptions, 323 yards and three touchdowns. He pretty much is the No. 2 receiver to superstar and former high school teammate Robert Woods, and has impressed everyone at USC.

2. Jadeveon Clowney, DE: South Carolina

7 of 8

Clowney has come in and pretty much done what has been expected out of him as a freshman: play very well.

He has shown that he has some things to learn, but you can't argue with his 6'7", 260-pound frame and athleticism.

He starts at DE for the Gamecocks opposite Melvin Ingram, and has totaled 21 tackles, six tackles for losses, three forced fumbles and four sacks in six games so far.

Clowney is a star right now, and will be a superstar by this time next year.

1. Sammy Watkins, WR: Clemson

8 of 8

Watkins is a star at this point, and is probably already a superstar. He's been that good for Clemson as a true freshman.

I had Watkins as one of the top 25 overall players in the 2011 class, but he's arguably the best true freshman in the country thus far.

Watkins has 38 receptions for 623 yards and six touchdowns and 19 rushes for 105 yards. He's also returned six kickoffs for 131 yards as well as a few punts, Watkins has been one of the main factors in Clemson's electrifying start to the 2011 season.

He easily takes the top slot thus far.
